August 23rd, AWS “Summer Heat #5” at American Legion Post #335, South Gate. Despite all the events going on this weekend, and in the week leading up to PWG BoLA next week, this card still drew a relatively large crowd.
1 – Peter Avalon p. Ryan McQueen
Strong opener that saw PPA counter Ryan’s 2nd Brainbuster attempt with a Cradle Rollup for the pin.
2 – Sasha Darevko p. Hector Canales
Good comedy match that saw Hector tap into his inner Rocky Balboa, but to no avail. Sasha won the battle to hit the Spike Tombstone Piledriver for the pin.
3 – Datura, AWS Lightweight Champion El Ridiculoso, Mariachi Loco, & Johnny Evers beat Ruby Raze, Tyler Bateman, Ricky Mandel, & Kid Lux
Good showing by the two Dutch wrestlers–Kid Lux & Johnny Evers. Datura may’ve had a few mistakes in the ring–which may seem reasonable coming off a recent injury, but she did manage to pull off a good Mexican Destroyer on Ricky for the pin.
4 – Hudson Envy successfully defended the AWS Women’s title, pinning Michelle Morgan
Probably not one of Hudson’s best title defenses against the Arizona native who hasn’t been in So Cal for quite awhile, but it was still a good showing against a heavier opponent, even if her finishing Roundhouse Kick hit Morgan’s midsection, instead of the face, for the pin.
5 – Famous B p. Ryan Taylor
These two went at it right out of gate. B had to overcome getting his arms picked apart by the submission specialist to roll a Flashing Lights into a Crucifix Rollup for the pin.
6 – Jeckles The Jester (w/ Sage Sin Supreme) p. Timothy Thatcher
Not as technical as Tim would’ve liked it, especially when you add in the few distractions from Sage. Jeckles rolled a Backbreaker into the Discus Elbow strike for the pin.
SM – 3-Way Battle. Rocky Romero beat Lil Cholo & SoCal Crazy
Two matches rolled into one with the absence of Che Cabrera. This was a strong Triple Threat match, with Rocky finding the right time to strike, waiting for Cholo to hit the Ace Crusher on SoCal Crazy, before KO’ing him with the Roundhouse Kick for the pin, then called out B-Boy.
M – Los Bandidos successfully defended the AWS Tag Team titles, beating Reno Scum
The high energy of this match warranted its main event status–which is something I couldn’t quite say about last week’s WWE SummerSlam main event. Great back-and-forth action that saw the Reno Scum duo really test Rico & Tito, but the champs squeezed out on top, hitting their team finisher on who I believe was Adam Thornstowe, to score the pin.
Overall, a strong card after the WWE PPV weekend and before BoLA Weekend. The wrestlers put on a great show, one lucky fan left with the AWS toy ring & Bart action figure; and Marko scored a pair of front row seats for the 10/25 “Halloween Slaughterhouse” show. MOTN obviously goes to the Bandidos/Reno Scum match, followed by the Rocky/Cholo/SoCal Crazy match, then the Famous B/Ryan Taylor match.
