Jay Cal’s View # 6

This week in Jay Cal’s View, I talk about my favorite moment of 2010 (so far), the rise in popularity of Lucha Libre and my conversation with wrestling promoter Gabriel Ramirez, the sheer awesomeness of SoCal Pro’s newest merchandise and the latest from the Santino Bros. Wrestling Academy. I also preview the upcoming events and give you the results of this week in action!”Maybe the greatest night of my life, X-Pac, Scorpio Sky and I were DX circa ’97 tonight,” via Joey Ryan’s Twitter Account. Johnny Yuma said “It felt like a RAW main event,” when explaining the X-Pac, Sky, and Ryan match up versus Natural Selection & Adam Pearce. The NWA Showcase featured a lot of matches over the course of the three days of action, but none were as memorable as seeing Scorpio Sky and Joey Ryan doing crotch chops along with Sean Waltman. This match will not be remembered for as being a match of the year or because of a single devastating move, but because the interaction between Natural Selection, Paul Bearer, C. Edward Vanderpyle, Adam Pearce, and the trio of Waltman, Ryan, and Sky. This was a great match, because it was a fun match. Although my favorite match of the weekend was between Joey Ryan and Adam Pearce for the NWA Worlds Championship in Oceanside. On that night, I feel like Joey Ryan stepped his game up, and was very close to winning that match. I overhead the Pearce say that “Joey Ryan kicked his ass!” Joey even got off the trademarked “Machine Gun” spine-buster, complete with shooting the crowd ala Karl Anderson. Alas a low blow prevented Joey from gaining anymore momentum and Pearce’s hand was raised

Lucha matches headlined each night of the Showcase taping, which was fitting for Jay Cal’s View as I was already working on some lucha libre related commentary. Lucha Libre’s popularity has been on a steady rise these past few years thanks to the works of Lucha VaVoom and wrestling promoters who been savvy enough to tap into a Spanish Speaking audience. Locally we have several lucha promotions, running events regularly– Lucha Lords & IMW, FMLL, IILL and countless others. I think the work of ECW and WCW helped set a foundation for that style of wrestling. But that was nearly 10 years ago. Today the rise of popularity has even reached the radar of MTV and On Demand PPV. MTV recently added Masked Warriors show on MTV2 and On Demand has gotten together with Masked Republic to feature Viva La Lucha. I recently had the opportunity to speak with one of the partners in Viva La Lucha, Gabriel Ramirez on my Alliance Radio podcast. Gabe is the promoter of Pro Wrestling Revolution, which runs mostly in Northern California and occasionally in SoCal, but also have done tours in Portugal, Las Vegas with the Cauliflower Alley Club and has co-promoted events in Mexico. The Revolution, has used many SoCal Talents as well, like Joey Ryan, TJ Perkins and a handful of others. Pro Wrestling Revolution also has started an internet wrestling show called Uprising. You can find it by clicking here http://vimeo.com/12905351.
Matches on Episode 2 of Uprising include a NWA Pro Heritage Title Match Ryan Taylor vs Mr. Wrestling #4 and a Lucha Libre Special Feature Hijo de Rey Mistirio & Hijo Del Rayo De Jalisco Jr. vs CMLL’s Felino & Lucha Vavoom’s El Chupacabre
