EWF – August 22nd, 2003

Tonight in Covina, EWF drew what had to be the hottest, most rabid crowd I’ve seen in quite some time. They ate up everything the workers did to draw heat, and it kicked the workers enthusiasm up that extra notch to make them want to send the fans home happy. The main event featured a pleasant swerve that no one saw coming, and the six-way match for the American Title had fans on their feet, and one woman near me almost to climax, more about her later. Mad McIntosh had several fans to the point of wanting to charge him. From top to bottom, this was another stellar offering from EWF.The Boarder Patrol, consisting of TJ Taz and Psycho Dave opened up the show against Psycho Silly Willy and Kid Carnage. With two psycho guys in this, fans just knew it would be off the hook. The feeling out period of this match had the Patrol trying to go for power maneuvers over the two smaller men, and the small two using their quickness to avoid a lot of it. Taz finally got a hold of Willy and worked him over pretty well with punches and slams. After wearing the man down well, Taz hit a clean Rock Bottom for two. After using the Rock Bottom as an opening move last month, he utilized it here to get a very near fall. It’s much more effective later in the match. After tagging in from Willy, Carnage came in, but due to a distracted referee, Boarder Patrol was able to break him down via chokes, double teams, and a few things which made the Lucha fan in me yell, “Foul!” Willy finally broke up a pin attempt, and the match broke down as the action spilled to the outside, where Willy and Tad had an absolute chopping fiesta. Back in, Carnage fell victim to a Psycho Dave power bomb, but Referee Rick Knox stopped the count at two when he noticed Carnage was unconscious. Knox threw the match out, and that was that.

Mad McIntosh and Bino Gambino were supposed to wrestle the artist formerly known as Pogo the Clown, but he didn’t show. Instead they wrestled Handsome Johnny Star and Walter Jackson. Mad came to ringside sipping from a flask, but hell, I’d be drinking too if I thought I was going to face Pogo. This match was odd, because Star and Mac were both heels, where Bino and Jackson were faces. This confused the crowd a bit, but they worked it out in the end. Bino and Jackson started out hold for hold, but with a lot of rope running and bits of aerial maneuvers. Walter was initially beat down, but when the opposition started the double team and sent him to the ropes, he scored with a sweet plancha onto both opponents and made the tag to Star. Star began working the right arm of Mad, using knee drops and arm bars. He culminated with an Undertaker style “Old School” top ropewalk into an arm drag. Mad was placed atop the buckle for what looked like a superplex, but he threw Star off and hit a flying clothesline. He jumped up and shouted, ”That’s how we do it in Glasgow!” He proceeded to celebrate with a traditional Scottish dance and little sips of Scotch, angering many fans at ringside. Star interrupted the celebration to work the arm more, putting Mad in the Code Red. Bino made the save and tagged in, and at this point I was distracted from the action by an irate female fan at ringside who apparently had been drinking as well. She started berating the Scotsman and threatening to throw her drink on him, and Mad encouraged her. She threw the drink, and Mad hit the flask and went over to her, spitting whiskey all over the girl. After the altercation, I looked back at the ring to see Jackson on the receiving end of a Bino broncobuster. Bino was thrown to the ground for his efforts, and ended up on the business end of a picture perfect Johnson split legged moonsault. Jackson followed up with some flying dropkicks. Bino tagged in Mad, who got in a sweet brain buster, then Bino got the beanie to do his “Hulking up” routine and hit a leg drop. Mad rolled out, and Bino threw Jackson to the ropes, then the two double clothes lined each other, creating a double down. Star came in and started throwing suplexes on Bino, and hit a nice top rope Macho Man style elbow drop. Jackson was tagged in, and one nice shooting star press later Bino was pinned. Jackson is a rookie, but he showed a lot of talent and promise tonight. Along with Alex Pincheck, I’m keeping my eye on this young high flyer. Indecently, my buddy Alknows planted the idea of a match between the two next show in Jesse’s ear, and it was announced. Woo hoo! I’m looking forward to that one as much as Mr. California is looking forward to learning how to wrestle.

Sweet Candy and Sexy Starrlit came out to wrestle, mush to the delight of the men in the crowd. I’d be willing to bet their combined ages adds up to less that 36, but no one seemed to care, they were in spandex. Joey Ryan would have gone ape shit for this one. Sexy took control early with a slam and some hair pulling, then locked in a sleeper for her 4th move of the match. Candy’s arm dropped twice before she got out of it, and she briefly took control, working Starrlit’s left arm. Starrlit battled back with stomach kicks, and gave Candy a 360-degree spin holding onto the hair. Starrlit got in a big body slam, a suplex, and a big clothesline, followed all this up with four consecutive leg drops and a brain buster. Candy kicked out and threw a schoolgirl roll up for 2, but a pin fall wasn’t in the cards. Starrlit clearly a lot more experience in the ring than Candy, as every little bit of Candy was answered with Starrlit taking back control of the match. Towards the end, Candy hit a leg scissors take down, and followed it up by attempting a lionsault, and looked to almost kill herself in the process. Starlit took the opportunity to drop Candy on her head of the top rope, and that was that. Not bad for two females rookies. The men in the crowd gave both a standing ovation, except for SoCal Leper, who apparently was not in any condition to stand up. He did quickly exit to the men’s room a few minutes later. You do the math.

After intermission they had a six-way match for the vacant EWF American title. This match featured Jason King, Rudy Luna, Jason Sanders (Under Pressure), Ragin’ Dawg, Kayam, and Enigma de Oro. This match had all six men going at it, no need to tag in and out, so it was hard to follow the action. It’s like covering the action in a battle royale. I’m just going to cliff note it and give the order of elimination. Sanders and King had a lot one on one at the start, while others battled outside. They did a lot of rope running with both men not quite hitting anything, and then it became a cluster bang. It got broken up a bit and Dawg and Luna exchanged chops stiffer than B. J. Darden’s new cellmate upon learning what B.J. stood for. Luna was pinned by Dawg after a face first pancake. Dawg was pinned after Sanders laid him over his knee and let King do a top rope leg drop. Sanders submitted when each Chivo had one of his legs in a half crab. Enigma submitted to a camel clutch by King. Kayam was pinned by Jason King after a victory roll. King is the American Champion. There was this woman sitting in front of me who was getting way too excited by every bit of offense Jason King got in, and was sounding very excited, and not in a normal wrestling fan kind of way. She was practically moaning every time he hit a nice move, and every dude sitting near me noticed it. So a memo to Jason King: You got a woman to worry about. You know the girl who used to go to UPW and was stalking Sadist? Same deal, bro. At least you don’t have kids for her to try and abduct. She’s probably a lot worse than that obsessed Desire fan a few months back at WPW.

Big Q and Vizzion wrestled Bo Cooper and Steve Masters. From the get go some assholes were chanting, “Supreme Wanna be” at Bo Cooper. This came across as ignorant; as Bo likes to wrestle, not perform stupid life threatening stunts. Sure, both guys are fat, but Bo has been at this for a very long time, and although he bleeds, to my knowledge he has never gone through a flaming table, barbed wire, or light tubes. Q started with Cooper, hit a few arm drags, and then tagged out to Vizzion. Cooper took a few drop kicks, and went to the corner for a hug from his partner. Masters came in to miss a chop on Vizzion by a mile, then receive a chop of his own. He was punched by Q, and then took a powder. All the stalling infuriated the crowd, and they wanted Cooper and Master’s blood. Bo came in to a short beating, and he took a powder as well. Masters came back in and convinced the referee to re-check Vision’s boots, then pulled a Pearl Harbor job on Vizzion. At this point, Masters distracted the referee a lot, allowing Bo to do some serious cheating with chokes and other illegal moves. Once Bo tagged in, Vizzion got in a sunset flip, but it was not enough. A massive brawl ensued that was out of the referee’s control, and Bo hit the Ink Shop Special on Vizzion. After getting only two, Bo got a steel chair. After aiming for Big Q, he hit his partner Masters, then laid out the other two in the ring. His chair shot to Masters busted Masters wide open, and he showed no remorse. Long time rival Vizzion saved Masters, and in the mic work that ensued, Vizzion and Masters made pals. They agreed to put the past behind them and focus their anger towards Bo Cooper. I’m not sure Masters will make a good baby face, but time will tell. Bo got on the mic and said that if Masters wanted to save his title, he’d better learn to wrestle. The match was made for the next Covina show between Bo and Masters, it should be great. Bo was also pissed he hasn’t received a bigger push from Hernandez, after 9 years in the business. Jesse told him the match was his, and it was his big chance. I guess at this point the ball is in Bo Cooper’s court. He has to put up or shut up.

This was a great night of pro wrestling, and the hot crowd made it all come together. While my opinions may not be popular on this site, I love pro wrestling directed at fans, and EWF does it better than almost anyone, they really work a crowd. I had a great time tonight, and look forward to the next show.
