Recap of IWL New Era 7

Shot of the Night: IWL - New Era 7 - 08-26-12

This Chaos Column is a recap of Insane Wrestling Leagues “New Era 7” at the Masonic Temple Lodge #305, Monrovia, August 26th 2012.  With some big names on the card, and a handful of marquee matches, a large crowd was on hand for this Sunday Night show. The venue’s higher ceiling compared to that of American Legion Post #299 in Chino is what allowed for the ladder match & the steel cage match to be held.

P – Triple-threat Live, “Dark” Pre-Show match. Riki De La Paz def. Tyler Durken & Andres “Hed” Cabrera when he pinned “Hed” w/ a nice Modified DDT.

1 – Magnum Pro Wrestling Fatal Four-Way Showcase Match. Chuck Taylor def. Ryan Kidd, Ric Ellis, & David E. Jones when he pinned Ryan Kidd w/ the Awful Waffle. Ryan Kidd, to his credit, put up a great showing.

2 – Tables Match. Justin Ryke def. Joseph Knox when he put him through the lone table that was set in the corner. Two broken pieces of the table were later given to two of the fans in attendance by Justin.

3 – Five-Team Tag Team Gauntlet Match. Johnny Yuma & Devin Sparks got the first elimination, def. Fresh 2 Death (Leo Blaze & Josh Rozay), when Yuma p. Leo Blaze w/ the Sex Factor. They didn’t last much longer, however, as Team High Risk (Simon Lotto & Steven Andrews) later eliminated them when Simon Lotto p. Yuma w/ the Crucifix Rollup. Simon & Steven later too care of The Mixtape Kings (Jerome “LTP” Robinson & Jacob Diez, but no Christian Cole) when Steven Andrews p. Jacob Diez w/ their team finisher. That left them to toe-to-toe w/ The Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson). Simon & Steven gave it everything they had, but the brothers proved to be too much in the end, and Matt Jackson p. Steven Andrews w/ the last series of Superkicks. Steven Andrews was openly frustrated, to the point where he superkicked Simon Lotto after the bell.

4 – Triple Threat Match, w/ the winner earning a title shot of his choice at the “Sicko Sircus 2012” show (w/ a date to be scheduled in the future). Eric Cross def. Peter Avalon & Chris Evans w/ the Cross Out on PPA for the pin. However, his berating, then cheap shot on a fan seated in the front row drew the ire of Promoter Vic Luna. Not only did Vic took away Eric Cross’s title shot and gave it to PPA, he also put Eric Cross at #1 on the 20-man Sicko Sircus Rumble match at the next show.

5 – Triple Threat Ladder Match for the IWL Anarchy Championship between Ray Rosas, Famous B, & Chris Kadillak. Plenty of high spots in this one, but the “most insane” spot came when Ray Rosas climbed the high ladder, up onto the rafters, & hit a Flying Headbutt onto both Famous B & Chris Kadillak, w/ the low ladder in between them. Ray later got a Flashing Lights Superkick from B to sent him falling onto a pile of thumbtacks that he had set in the corner, but he managed to recover fast enough to watch B & Kadillak go flying off the ladder in a duel for the title belt, and managed to climb up to retrieve the belt to retain the title. Narrow choice for match of the night, simply because the crowd was most into this one.

6 – Last Man Standing Match after intermission. B-Boy outlasted Tyler Bateman (w/ Raze), busting him open & giving him a major beatdown along the way in an otherwise relatively even match. Tyler Bateman gave it everything he could, even mounting a comeback after the major beatdown, but one big Shining Wizard from B-Boy did him in in the end. The ring crew had to do extensive cleanup, using bleach to wipe away Tyler Bateman’s shed blood from the ring & the floor, even as the next match was about to get started.

SM – Jay Lethal p. Willie Mack w/ a backflip into an Ace Crusher in a great standard singles match. Great back-and-forth action between the two, which can only make me wonder if or when someone like Jay Lethal will vouch for ROH to offer the current NWA Hollywood TV Champion a chance to shine in a few ROH shows.

M – Steel Cage Match for the IWL Heavyweight Championship between Eric Watts & Johnny Saovi, where the winner could only do it by cage escape. Good back-and-forth action from the two, which ended w/ a race to get out of the cage first. Johnny Saovi climbed the cage to get out, while Eric Watts went for the door. In the end, it was Johnny Saovi who landed both of his feet on the floor to win that race & win the title, capping a very strong card.
