Jay Cal’s View #75

I had a great weekend going to back to back NWA Hollywood Shows.  This week in the View, I talk about Sky vs. Madrid, a former wrestler is found guilty, updates on the podcast, the Alliance-Wrestling.com relaunch, autograph signings at Frank & Sons, Marty Jannetty returns to SoCal and this weeks schedule of wrestling.  Also, no wrestling on Sunday?  What gives?

Nick Madrid vs. Scorpio Sky
NWA Hollywood went wire to wire last weekend with its first non-televised event in Downey and the next night in Glendale as part of its Television.  And a lot of people were talking about the match between Cabana and Pearce for the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship in a first blood match.  But on of my favorite matches from the weekend was Nick Madrid vs. Scorpio Sky.  Speaking to Madrid after the show he told me was very happy to have the opportunity to step into the ring with Sky.  And without all the Bravado of the Experience, Sky shared the same sentiment with me.  I can’t remember a time I saw a match back to back and it still be relevant and capture my attention the way this match did.  Clearly in SoCal there is Scorpio Sky and everybody else.  Sky has had some phenomenal matches over the past six Hollywood Studio shows.  His matches always capture the fans attention and usually will split the crowd.  Great matches against Ryan Taylor, Johnny Yuma, Famous B, Willie Mack, and even dating back to win he won the championship in the decision match against SoCal Crazy.  For Madrid, I’ve always admired the way he can get a crowd going.  From Mach-1 to SoCal Pro, he has a natural charisma that the fans get behind.  And these two back to back matches really tested Madrid.   In Downey, Madrid had Sky beat until Big Duke came in and caused chaos.  His driver seemed to finish off Madrid, however Nick was able to kick out.  To see highlights from the Downey show, check out this video.

Marty Jannetty returns to SoCal
The fan who once stood next to the multi-time WWE Champion Shawn Michaels finds his way back to SoCal and this weekend he takes on SoCal Pro’s Tommy Wilson in the Main Event of A New Reign.  Jannetty will be available for photos and autographs at the show.  The last time I remember Marty Jannetty in SoCal he was teaming with the Young Bucks taking on Joey Ryan, Karl Anderson, and “Sexy” Sonny Samson in High Risk Wrestling.  ***Correction & Retraction:  Ben Tomas says it was actually Diablo aka Dustin Cutler.  ***  This is an interesting dynamic for SoCal Pro, the roster has been very good, but Tommy has beaten some of the best in the San Diego area.  Bringing in a guy like Jannetty is a breath of fresh air in SoCal.

Justice Served Chippy Sanchez is sentenced.
I root for the truth, always will.  We live in a very litigious world where people can allege just about anything.  This wasn’t such a case. The world of professional wrestling has a bit of sleaze attached to it, always has and always will, but criminal actions should be punished.  This wasn’t sleazy this was a crime.  When the allegations were made a lot of guys came on to the message board to discuss.  To bring closure to this, Chippy Sanchez was found guilty and now faces a maximum sentence of 24 years to life in state prison and mandatory sex offender registration. He is scheduled for a hearing June 22 at the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana.

Talk NWA
This week we’re speaking to Frank Krewda the Editor-in-Chief of Pro Wrestling Illustrated.  Of course I’m going to ask him about Nick Madrid’s run in the Rookie of the Year of 2011.  I’m also going to ask about why SoCal doesn’t get more recognition and we’ll talk about the PWI 500.
