PWG ”Free Admission (Just Kidding)” Preview by Paul Newberry

PWG “Free Admission (Just Kidding)” Preview
by Paul Newberry

Hello everyone out there in TV land! And welcome to
yet another (unofficial) PWG Preview! Because one guy…
kind of liked it last time! (At least he better have…I
mean he cashed my check)

Now I’d bet $1.99 that no one else would knows this,
but this actually marks a full year of these PWG
“Thoughts and Predictions” write-ups (it started on
various message boards as a cheap way to bump the PWG
threads)Wow, It seems it was like only 12 months ago
really… Yes, I’m proud to say that this has grown from
a short, unpopular, poorly written column to a
slightly longer, unpopular, poorly written column.
Gee, time sure does fly eh?

So with that in mind, I thought it’d be fun to check
up on my prediction record (covering previous booked
matches from PWG’s “Inch Longer than Average” till
“Use Your Illusion 4”) and it’s 65-28. Was it expert
prognostication or just dumb luck? Your guess is as
good as mine. But overall not bad really, my best
effort was Tango and Cash Night One: 8-1 (but who
predicted that time limit draw? Save Kenny Kingston)
my worst was “Kee_ The _ee out of our _ool” at 1-6
(only got the insanely oblivious Pearce Vs. Quance
right, And hey, I thought Charles Mercury was due!)So let that be a lession to all you out there in PWG
Fantasy leagues… pay attention to my predictions! And
be the envy of online dorks everywhere! In fact
speaking of predictions, here’s my pick for this
year’s NHL Stanley Cup. The winner will be… NO ONE!!
Ha ha because they’re on strike… get it? No one!
Genius I tells ya…

Anyway, on with the preview! (Quick Note to
my FAN: This one is shorter than average, because you
see… I was ah…abducted by illegal Aliens… yeah…and
forced to play Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas against
my will, add that to my recent good fortune wit’ da
bitches. And let’s just say my mind was on things
other than making Ricky Reyes/Ricky Ricardo
comparisons, and I didn’t have as much time to spend
on this preview, Forgiveness please!)

PWG Episode 20 “Free Admission” (Just Kidding)

It’s the dawn of a new age in the misty mountain
realm of the guerrilla. Previously at PWG’s “Use Your
Illusion 4” one of it’s most fabled sagas met it’s
waterloo as Darth Dragon was at last able to settle
the score with his age-old adversary, Joey Skywalker,
after defeating him in a 60 plus minute duel to the
death. Now still reeling from the epically epic
epicness of that epic match, PWG is set once again to
be rocked and perhaps rolled to it’s very core, as
without question, the two top players, Super Dragon
and Frankie Kazarian will collide! With the Pro
Wrestling Guerrilla championship and the balance of
power in PWG on the line! Who will admerge from this
war as the true ruler of PWG?

Also:

It’s International warfare as Canada’s best invade
PWG, as El Generico and Kevin Steen face the
hottest tag team on The West Coast, The Aerial
Express!

Scott Lost is out for some “First Family”
retribution as he meets the colossal challenge of the
man consider by many to be the world’s best,
American Dragon!

It’s the Civil War all over again! The North Vs.
South. When SoCal’s Havana Pitbulls collide
with the NoCal duo of Hook Bomberry and Apollo
Cree… err Kahn!

Plus the hottest high flyer in wrestling today,
Jack Evans makes his PWG debut against Indy
Megastar Christopher Daniels!

Yes, this show is shaping up to be all that and a bag
of chips (and not the Diarrhea-causing ‘Olean’ Chips
either!)

PLAY BALL!

Match One:

The Havana Pitbulls (Ricky Reyes & Rocky Romero)
vs. Hook Bomberry and Apollo Kahn

Past History: Ricky Reyes and Apollo Kahn
previously squared off in a singles match at PWG- “The
Musical”

PWG Records: Ricky Reyes is 7-4 overall, Rocky
Romero is 4-2 overall, 4-1 as a duo, Hook Bomberry is
1-5, Apollo Kahn is 2-4, they are 1-1 as a duo (with a
win over Disco Machine/Mr. Excitement at the debut
show and a loss to Hardkore Inc at BAM3K Night 2)

My Thoughts: Thinking about it a little, both
teams are very similar. Both are in that Hart
Foundation mold, as on each team, you have an Anvil
(Reyes, Kahn) and a Hitman (Romero, Bomberry) Where I
am going with this? No clue… I thought it was neat at
the time.

Err anyway, as you may remember, Reyes and Kahn
really tore it up at PWG’s “The Musical” so you know
there’s chemistry there and of course Rocky Romero and
Hook Bomberry are both amazing overall performers who
I fully believe could produce a good match against a
brick wall or even Bob Holly

It seems like I say this for every match, but this
could be potentially be a show stealer. .

My Prediction: Havana Pitbulls, can’t really
see them losing this one.

Match Two Electri… nah too easy

Joey Ryan vs. The UK Kid

Last time:

Joey Ryan: In what will go down as the greatest
match up in PWG History, Ryan nearly had Super Dragon
defeated, in the overtime period of their 60-minute
iron match… before finally falling prey to a Psycho
Driver on the floor. Now at “Free Admission (Just
Kidding)” Joey Ryan will have to fight his way back
into PWG contention by defeating The Kid from UK.

UK Kid, Baby! : UK Kid reversed his recent bad
luck in PWG, by scoring a hard fought victory over
Tony Stradlin. Now he looks to continue his winning
ways with a victory over one of PWG’s top players,
Joey Ryan.

Past History: Met in two singles matches in
late 2002 for GSCW and AIWA

PWG Records: Joey Ryan is 10-13 overall, 4-6
as a single, UK Kid is 1-2 so far in PWG.

My Thoughts: Perfect match up, for both of them
here. I think everyone knows the old wrestling stand
by of the American babyface vs. The evil foreigner. Be
it The Iron Sheik, LUGVIG BORGA (from America’s arch
rival… Finland!) Yokozuna and I dunno… Iron Mike
Sharp? Several evil Samoans, Middle easterners and Umm
Jim Powers was probably a commie too I think. Anyway,
much like Reality TV it’s a really simple and proven
formala (annoyingly so) but hey it works. And it has
already worked between these two. I don’t know if
anyone recalls the 2002 GSCW match up (available on
Best of Joey Ryan Vol. 1) but that was a perfect
example. The crowd was really into it, and it really
brought the best out of both men. So expect more of
the same here.

My Prediction:Joey Ryan

Match three:

“Fallen Angel” Christopher Daniels vs. Jack
Evans

PWG Records: Christopher Daniels is 3-2 in
singles matches and 4-5 overall. Jack Evans will be
making tuna noodle casserole and also his PWG debut at
this show.

Past History: None, to my knowledge.

My Thoughts: Let’s start with Jack Evans, of
course a very unique performer, that well, whose ring
style…you either have to love or hate. I personally
however think he’s an incredible spectacle, I mean
countless wrestlers are capable of good “workrate”
matches…. but how many suckas can bust out a corkscrew
630? (By my count only Jack Evans, King Kong Bundy and
maybe Paul T. after a few beers) Not to mention his
now legendary double moonsault off a cage in Ring of
Honor Wrestling. He’s a sight to behold indeed… but
don’t overlook his non “Flippy flip” ring skills
either, his move selling ability is among the best I
can remember in quite some time.

For better Info on Jack Evans: Check out this nice
article Rob Naylor wrote about him:
http://www.paradisecityninjas.bravehost.com/jackevans.htm
Better than anything I could cough up right
now…

His opposition, Christopher Daniels should need no
introduction to anyone who may possibly ever be
reading this, as he is arguably one of the best on
this or possibly any other planet. He’s worked
everywhere and probably won everything there is to win
in the world of Indy wrestling. So let’s skip it… we
already know he’s great.

As the match itself, it’s a very interesting one on
paper. On one hand I think it could turn out to be an
excellent match (not hard with the talent involved),
On the other hand, I fear this could possibly be a
huge clash of styles, on another hand (Yes, I have 3
hands. I was born that way L) you have to have ask
yourself, do you ever get anything less than merely
“good“ from Chris Daniels? And anything less than “WOW
did you see that guy flip?” from Jack Evans? No, not
at all…

My Prediction: Christopher
Daniels

Match four:

The Aerial Express (Quicksilver & Scorpio Sky) vs.
Kevin Steen and El Generico

Last time: the AXP ran into a little bump in the road
to the PWG tag titles. Last month after they thought
they’d won the belts from Lost/Bosh… they learned that
they had in fact lost the match by way of
disqualification via Slymm’s interference. Now in
order to get back in position for a rematch, they will
have to face the sizeable challenge of international
superstars, Kevin Steen and El Generico.

The comedy styling of Steen & Generico! :

For those who may not be familiar with the IWS style.
It’s best knowing going in that’s it’s not really for
your intensely analytical “smark” fan. Really you
could think of it as Jerry Bruckheimer popcorn
wrestling- a bunch of extremely gifted athletes
popping off one insane stunt after another before you
can blink. It’s wrestling the way it was meant to be,
fun, joyful type of entertainment. Usually with
insanely enthusiastic crowds (most of the most heated
I’ve ever seen from an Indy crowd) This time in PWG,
we get to see perhaps their two best talents… which
I’ll introduce you to know:

Kevin Steen: “Mr. Wrestling” (no, not Tim
Woods… he’s dead silly!) is considered by many to be
top wrestling prospect in Canada. Trained by “The
Mountie” Jacques Rougeau and Eric Mastrocola (who
wasn’t a Mountie I don’t think) He’s been so
impressive, that he’s already reportedly garnered
looks from the WWE (recently had a try out with OVW)
Also has been putting on some great matches with the
best Canada has to offer, as well as with well known
Indy Superstars such as Steve Corino, Roderick Strong
and PWG regulars Christopher Daniels and Samoa Joe in
several promotions such as EWR, and has recently
impressed in the US with appearances with CZW and
JAPW. His style is a good combination of power and
speed, and he possesses a deadly arsenal of impressive
maneuvers, including his finisher “The package
piledriver” A true star on the raise… don’t be
surprised if you see major things from him in the
future.

El Generico The “Generic luchadore” is quite
the character. Who really gained in popularity due to
his part in the hilariously hilarious series of skits
with Beef Wellington.. He was a former IWS Champion
for a few minutes (before losing it to his partner for
this show), Winner of the 2004 EWR Elite 8 tourney,
and has squared off with Indy “It boy” AJ Styles in
EWR as well. Has a high flying style (I don’t think he
would have been a bit out of place in say, Classic
Revolution Pro) and likes to finish with the 450 and
an insane turnbuckle brainbuster that has to be seen
to be believed. Ole!

(Thanks to El Generico’s favorite net smark, Jay
Doring for assorted help with this info. I know all
you diehard IWS fans just love that guy! And his
infamous use of the word, YARDTARD! I was thinking of
saying something offensive here myself and maybe
getting an “F*** Newberry” chant at an IWS show… oh
well maybe next time)

PWG Records: Quicksilver is 7-8, and Sky is
6-7, 3-2 as a duo, Steen and Generico are of course
making their debuts.

My Thoughts: Once again, PWG brings the best to
us! Last time we got the Chikara experience, this time
around we get to experience the other new sensation
sweeping indy wrestling. Yes, not since “Canadian
Strongman” Dino Bravo burst on to the scene has a
Quebecer made such an impact in such a short time.
After show stealing appearances with CZW and JAPW, the
IWS boys have become seemingly overnight sensations in
the US. And PWG choose the perfect opponents for
them. One of the best teams going right now, I still
don’t think I’ve ever seen a bad AXP match so of
course this one’s going to be good. Can’t wait to see
Sky match up with Generico, and I’m already cringing
at the thought of poor Quicksilver taking The
Turnbuckle Brainbuster or one of Steen’s huge german
sup-lays.

I’ll go out on a limb and predict this one will be the
sleeper match of the whole show (and on a card like
this, that’s saying something)

My Prediction: The AXP take and move back into
title contention.

Match Five:

Scott Lost Vs American Dragon

Last TiMe! : The PWG Tag Team Champions, Scott Lost
and Chris Bosh (newly dubbed “Arrogance”) were given
all they could handle by The Aerial Express. After a
miscommunication with stable mate Babi Slymm. In which
Slymm speared Bosh, leading to a DQ… saving Arrogance
the titles but creating mammoth dissention among the
First Family. Was Slymm feeling the effects of dreaded
green monster Gomblor err jealousy? After being passed
up as Lost’s new partner in favor of Bosh? Arrogance
then layed out a challenge to Slymm and a partner of
his choosing for a match, next month. However.. Due an
injury suffered by Chris Bosh… that issue will have to
wait for another day.

This time, Lost will have to attend to some pressing
First Family Business by squaring off with The
American Dragon! The man who cost First Family leader,
Frankie Kazarian a victory via his interference in his
match with Samoa Joe at “The Next Show”

PWG Records: Scott Lost is 12-7 overall, 2-1 as
a single; American Dragon is 7-2-1 overall, 3-1-1 as a
single.

Past History? : They met in a tag contest in
the semi finals of PWG’s “Tango and Cash”

My Thoughts: For several years now, Scott Lost
has been on the verge of nationwide superstardom. Just
needing that little shove to send him over the edge
and open up the eyes of those filthy non-believers.
Well, wait no longer, as this is the match. I’m
predicting this will finally rocket him to the next
level. Because you can have no better opponent in the
world right now, then American Dragon. Again as anyone
reading this should know, Dragon’s track record of
great matches is longer than… well it’s long.

Also, consider this… American Dragon had some of his
best matches to date against Paul London. And of
course, Scott Lost is often favorably compared to
London. So we could be the on the verge of something
beyond description here.

Honestly, the rest of this card is excellent… but in
my opinion, this will be the match of the show. And
then wrestling world… prepare to get LOST! (yeah I
know that didn’t work)

My Prediction: American Dragon wins it. I’m
guessing leading to something in the future with
Kazarian, Samoa Joe and Super Dragon.

Match six:

PWG Championship Match
Franke Kazarian vs. Super Dragon

Backstory? : Through out recorded history, every
promotion has their franchise player, their ace, their
MVP, their Kurt Rambis, their Mazda MPV, Their alpha
male if you will, that rules all around them.

But much like Presidential candidate John Kerry argued
the point, that there are indeed two Americas (Duh,
ever hear of SOUTH America!) in PWG you could argue
that there are in fact two PWGs! One run by Frankie
Kazarian (PWG: Hollywood) and the other as ran by
Super Dragon (PWG: Wolfpac)

Since day stinking one, Both Super Dragon and Frankie
Kazarian have been PWG’s marquee talent. With them
regularly sharing The Main Event position (you could
argue that point about SoCal itself as well) both
seemingly existing in alternate PWG dimensions (aside
from a meeting as part of a 6-man tag at “Pimpin’ In
The High Places”)

That is until, “The Next Show” when Frankie Kazarian
had a title defense against Samoa Joe (was had
unfinished business with Super Dragon) before the
match could come to a positive conclusion… American
and Super Dragon hit the ring and jumped Joe. Costing
Frankie the victory and a chance to score a huge win
over Joe. Clearly, something huge was now brewing
between the 4 PWG super powers.

And now on November 13th at PWG’s “Free Admission
(Just Kidding)” it’s PWG’s version of crisis on
infinite earths… PWG worlds will collide, as Frankie
Kazarian meet the challenge of SUPER DRAGON! Who will
come out of this one, the true ruler of PWG!

Past History: They have met once before in a
singles match in April 2002 in a promotion called
“W2K2” (that was named SoCal match of the month) and
at least twice in tag matches including
Kazarian/B-Boy/Samoa Joe Vs. Super Dragon/The
Messiah/Tech 9 in MPW, and Kazarian/Joey Ryan/CM Punk
Vs. Super Dragon/Adam Pearce/Colt Cabana at PWG’s
“Pimpin’ In High Places”

PWG Records: Frankie Kazarian is 15-4-1
overall, 14-3-1 as a single; Super Dragon is 17-6
overall, 9-2 as a single

My Thoughts: Darn, anyone who even half way
follows PWG knows this one is huge, Kind of like of
the PWG equalent of Hulk Hogan Vs. Ultimate Warrior
from Wrestle mania 6. IMO, Dragon and Kazarian are
PWG’s two top names. Plus the story is really tight
as well, Samoa Joe wants the title, Super Dragon wants
Samoa Joe. So what does Super Dragon do? He goes after
the title to make Samoa Joe have to come to him.
Really good stuff here…

As for the match itself, I could go on and on about
their accomplishments… but I’ll give you the cliff
notes version, Super Dragon rules, Frankie Kazarian
rules (Yes, he does TNA fans) This match will rule,
Australian rules football, The Ramones Rule Ok? Ah…GO
Packers! (can you tell I’m half asleep while writing
this? I sure can’t 🙂 )

My Prediction: Bold prediction: Super Dragon
claims the title. And I’m 65 and 28 with these
predictions remember.

Plus!

The most famous “dancing machine” since Gong Show
legend, ‘Gene, Gene’ the Dancing Machine! Disco
Machine!

The red hot, Puma! (10-1 in singles action! Wow
I can’t believe it’s not butter)

Road Warrior Hawk’s worst nightmare, Excalibur!
He’s dead scared of him!

Former NWA:Wildside star, Tony “Don’t call me Todd”
Stradlin!
(Coming off a TNA TV appearance, where
he lost… to the mighty… Johnny B. Badd? As hard as it
may sound… don’t hold that against him… I’m sure
plenty of people have lost to Johhny B…. NAH)

Everyone’s favorite recreational drug abuser who’s not
in a popular musical group: Top Gun Talwar!

Mexico’s hottest duo since Tequila and vomit bags,
Los Rojo Locos,

And EVEN more!! Plus get this; I’ve heard vague rumors
that DJ AC will indeed be in DA HOUSE! (and if it’s in
the Weekly World News it’s gotta be true!)

To sum it, I’d say on paper, this has got to be one
of the strongest PWG cards to date. So If at all
possible, attend this freaking show! Don’t think of it
as JUST attending a wrestling show at a Jewish
Community Center near a Pioneer Chicken (!) in
Hollywood… think of it as an investment in the very
future of awesomeness!
