EWF 9/24/04 Tag Team Review

Part-time SoCalUNCENSORED contributor Stan aka SoCal Strong Style and SCU newcomer Ron Anticevich are here to break down the last EWF show in Covina. Stan has been around the scene for a good amount of time, but not much is known about this new guy Ron. Long time SoCal follower, first time contributor.

EWF
Knights of Columbus
9.24.04
Covina, CA

Stan: I arrived at a quarter till 8 and saw such a small crowd for an EWF Covina show. Then all of a sudden at about 5 till, a stream of what seemed like 75 to 100 people came through the doors over the next ten minutes. So much for the small crowd! Another packed house for the boys at EWF.Jung Lee vs. Lyger Extreme Rivera
Stan: This was a solid opener. I’d have to say this is the best work I have seen from either of the young wrestlers. Rivera had a couple of very nice spots including a twisting senton and a “Scott Lost” spear. Lee didn’t try to do much in this match and I mean that in a good way. He stayed within himself and was much more technically sound than I have seen from him in the past. Jung Lee hit a top rope rana for the win.

Ron: This was the opening match. I have only seen these two wrestle one time prior to this but they still impressed. Nothing bad to say here, except for the fact that EWF does not have a light/cruiserweight title, because I cannot see either one of these guys holding a title except for the tag-team gold. Either way, great match. Jung Lee wins.

Vince ‘The Crusader’ Garcia vs. Jason King
Stan: Jason King is in my opinion one of the top workers EWF has. Vince the Crusader is a much bigger and much more limited worker in the ring. Despite that, King was able to make a decent match out of it. Vince played the “big man role” sticking to clotheslines, splashes, etc. King was the glue in this match. He worked Vince’s leg with dropkicks for a good part of the match. Chopping the tree down so to speak. King also did a very nice springboard moonsault during the match. The finish saw Vince disqualified after Bo Cooper, Bino Gambino and Rick Richter did a run in and attacked King. Post match, Richter demands Bino vs. King for next month. Jesse Hernandez agrees and makes the match.

Ron: I have to agree with Stan on this one. I cannot believe they are wasting the talent of Jason King with Vince Garcia. Although once the match started, Jason King immediately went to take the big man down as his main target was Garcia’ legs. But as the match progressed the tide turned and went basically downhill from there. The only thing that saved this match for me was the interference by the Richter Family led by Bino Gambino with Rudy Luna, Bo Cooper and manager Rob Richter. Which led to a beatdown on Jason King. Then Jesse Hernandez comes in and breaks it up and makes a match for next month, Jason King vs. Bino Gambino.

Something a little funny happens every match from here on out. All matches are announced with a 60-minute time limit. That had me rolling. I’ve yet to see a 25 minute match in the EWF. Old school baby!

The Plague vs. Supreme Lee Great
Stan: Supreme Lee Great jaws with the crowd before the match and threatens to leave. Crowd not liking SLG! Crowd was solidly behind Plague. As far as the match goes it was all Plague. His style is very similar to Road Warrior Hawk in his younger days. He had a ton of good spots including overhead pressing SLG 5 times, a nice flying shoulder block and a Muta-esque handspring back elbow. What little fight Great put up was quickly squashed by Plague. Plague gets the pin with a top rope headbutt.

Ron: The Plague is freaking huge. He came out to Electric Funeral by Black Sabbath, which made me pull out my Sabbath CD’s again and crank’em. Supreme Lee Great is not a SoCal wrestler and nobody in the crowd cared for this guy. He has a Jeff Hardy look but that is about it. The fans tonight were behind the Plague, who manhandled Supreme Lee Great. I hope this guy does not come back SoCal.

El Negro & Alex Pincheck vs. Syrus & Ragin Dawg w/Powerhouse Pops
Stan: The crowd was very hot for this match. “Russian Negro” chants filled the building throughout this match. Cyrus had tons of heel heat. He was bombarded by nose jokes and references all match. This was a fun match that saw El Negro being squashed by Cyrus and Dawg for a good portion of the time including a really bad senton by Ragin Dawg. Finish saw Ragin Dawg hitting a frog splash on El Negro for the pin. Post match Dawg, Cyrus and PH Pops argue.

Ron: Immediately the crowd broke into the ‘Negro’ chants then when Pincheck (who is Russian by the way) made his way to the ring, the crowd chanted ‘Russian Negro”. Then with Syrus made is way to the ring, the chants of ‘Gonzo’ broke out as Syrus has a big nose. The team of Syrus and Dawg were just too powerful for the ‘Russian Negro’ team. Powerhouse Pop’s also got his cheap shots in. And in the end, Dawg and Syrus pick up the victory. After a three count, Pincheck was outside the ring taking a beating by Powerhouse Pop’s, Syrus threw Pincheck back in the ring, and was telling Powerhouse and Dawg the match was over and enough already. Interesting developments with the new tag-team.

Black Metal vs. Ghetto Psycho Big Q
Stan: Upon entering the ring, Metal told a woman to, “Chupa his chili”. As far as the actual match goes, there isn’t much to speak about. Black Metal was in control for most of the match. Big Q eventually gets the pin with a modified version of a sidewalk slam that resembles Babi Slymm’s finisher. Post match Big Q invites all the kids to join him in the ring. Joey Ryan Fan ran to the ring and joined the kids. Jumping up and down like Rocky after he had just run the steps in Philly with his hands raised. Funny ass stuff. Evil ref Rick Knox then made him leave the ring for having too much fun. Classic Joey Ryan Fan moment!

Ron: Once this match got on its way, Black Metal was thrown to the outside. Where he was talking Spanish to a Caucasian lady. Metal told her to play with this chile’, the lady just laughed. I think because she could not understand Mr. Metal. After that incident both competitors locked up and I went to go relieve myself, took advantage of the no-line at the concession stand and walked around to the outside. When I returned Big Q scored the pinfall victory. Then Big Q grabbed the mic and invited everyone to the ring. Joey Ryan Fan jumped into the ring, as others did as well and started jumping around. Then referee Rick Knox who is also the chief-of-staff for SCRAP Magazine, threw JRF out because he was having too good of a time. = ( Big Q said their would be another party next time.

At this point Rikishi and Tonga Kid come out and do a short tribute to Big Boss Man before intermission.

JC Castro vs. Vizzion (champion) for the EWF Heavyweight Title
Stan: This was in my opinion the best match of the night. Vizzion is insanely over with the crowd at EWF. JC got tons of heel heat all match. Both guys put out a great effort here. Both were able to shine in this match, filled with nonstop back and forth action. One of the best EWF matches I have ever seen. At the end of the match, Black Pearl did a run in to stop a ref count by pulling the ref from the ring. Moments later, Vizzion hit a top rope elbow for the pin. Crowd interaction was hilarious during this match with too many chants to count. Joey Ryan Fan also force hugged Vizzion pre and post match. Good times.

Ron: This was one of the better Vizzion matches. The two worked extremely well together. Black Pearl made his presence felt as he tried to assist Castro in a victory but failed. Vizzion got the win with a Macho Man elbow off the top rope and chased Black Pearl and Castro off with an assist from the chair.

Black Pearl & Antonio Mestre vs. Mike Cordova & Tonga Kid
Stan: The crowd was very into this match due to Tonga Kid. The good of this match was mostly Tonga Kid and Black Pearl. Tonga kept it simple with a few headbutts, a couple of bodyslams and a splash. Cordova looked better than the last time I saw him. Mestre just does zero for me. His gimmick just doesn’t work. Most people have no clue what gimmick he is even going for. Can’t remember the finish of this one.

Ron: Like Stan told me, the good of this match was Tonga Kid & Black Pearl; the bad was Antonio Mestre & Mike Cordova. Tonga Kid did headbutts and bodyslams. Black Pearl is an awesome competitor. I sure hope he is gunning for a world title shot against Vizzion. Not much here expect Cordova sucks. Even though he and Tonga Kid got the duke.

Bino Gambino, Bo Cooper & Rudy Luna w/ Rick Richter (the Richter Family) vs. Los Chivos & Handsome Johnny Starr
Stan: With the exception of Bo Cooper’s work in this match, it wasn’t very good. The match just never seemed to get going. Finish saw Johnny Starr hit a top rope splash for the pin on Bo Cooper. The finish seemed really rushed and anticlimactic.

Ron: The Richter Family came out first and got the crowd all riled up. Then Johnny Starr came out next with a Zorro type mask. WTF? I guess, since the Chivos wear masks, Johnny wanted to join the trend. Then the Chivos came to the ring. This match was ready to go. But in the end, I didn’t feel that it delivered. One of the Chivos (I think it was Enigma) had his right wrist heavily taped but that didn’t stop the Chivo Power. The finish came with Rudy and Bino delivering abdominal stretches to both Chivos leaving Bo Cooper and Johnny Starr but it was Johnny Starr with the roll-up for the win. After the match, The Richter Family had problems and Jesse Hernandez interjected himself into the situation. Saying next month, Bo Cooper will take on Rudy Luna for the title of the Enforcer of the Richter Family.

Overall
Stan: Overall a very fun show with tons of crowd heat as usual. So many chants, it was insane. A nice group from the SoCalUNCENSORED board is starting to attend. Fridays show had Joey Ryan Fan, Seal Fan aka Deadkingz, Ron, Lizard King and his buddy, and even some of the Frank and Sons vendors. George, JR and Phantom Soulja have been attending as of late as well. It’s a nice change of pace from the other feds and a great place to just mark out.

Ron: EWF has seen better times at the Knights of Columbus. Tonight was not one of them. The crowd is usually all fired up but not this time. If you have never been to an EWF show, I think you should give it a shot. Because I feel that they are different from any other SoCal fed/promotion. Yes, some of their wrestlers are not very good. But the vibe of the crowd is totally different. I feel like a little kid because the majority of the audience is children and they really get behind their heroes. Just like when I was a kid and went to see the WWF or NWA. This is Ron Anticevich, saying see you at the next show.
