Huge Wrestling Weekend in San Diego County

Recently San Diego County has become a real hot bed for wrestling. There are five promotions running at least somewhat regularly, a wrestling school with another opening up soon, and a proximity to Tijuana that infuses talent into the area that can’t be found elsewhere in Southern California. This upcoming weekend there will be a huge FMLL/LLME show on Friday and three wildly different shows running against each other on Saturday.

FMLL/LLME

Friday, May 13th will see arguably the biggest non-WWE show in the San Diego area in some time when FMLL and LLME will be running a joint show in Oceanside. The show will feature Blue Demon, L.A. Park, Hijo de Rey Misterio, Solar, and Hijo de L.A. Park among others. The actual matches have yet to be announced, but with the star power on this card I would expect a packed house. In fact, the lineup for this show appears to be better than the lineup for Friday night’s lucha show in Tijuana.

SoCal Pro

Staying in Oceanside, Saturday May 14th will see SoCal Pro holding their first show since their huge 9th anniversary show in April. “May Day” will feature Mike Camden making his first defense of the SoCal Pro heavyweight title against Brandon Gaston in what should be a very good match. Camden is really starting to hit his stride and becoming a really good technical wrestler. Gatson is a really good veteran who has been around SoCal for years with brief runs in WWE and PWG.

Also on the show Ricardo Rodriguez (Chimaera) will be making his return to SoCal Pro taking on SoCal Crazy in what has potential to be another good match. At April’s show Ju Dizz defeated Anthony Idol to win the Golden State title, and he will be making his first defense against Big Daddy Destro. Speaking of Idol, while no match for him has been announced, he will be on the show as will the new EWF Champion Andy Brown taking on Dirty Doug in a number one contenders match for the Golden State title.

Baja Stars USA

Baja Stars USA will also be running on Saturday the 14th with a show that sees the Baja Stars return of Teddy Hart. The main event of this show with Teddy Hart and Enigma versus Steve Pain and Bestia 666 is really strong, and could easily be the match of the weekend. The rest of the card isn’t as strong as some of the recent Baja Stars shows, and SoCal Pro appears to have a stronger show from top to bottom, but it should still be pretty decent. Baja Stars’ undercard seems to often change from the scheduled  lineup to the actual lineup. Going off of what has been announced, the opener of Felino Salvaje and Kid Tornado versus Scorpio 2000 and Veinom should be really fun. All four have been fairly impressive in their recent Baja Stars showings. There is also a women’s tag match with Lady Lee and Sage Sin taking on Cristal and Amazona.

Super Awesome Showdown

Lastly, a promotion called Super Awesome Showdown will be running on the 14th in Pacific Beach with “Infinite Horizon.” I admittedly do not know a whole lot about these guys, but it has been described to me as combining sci-fi and fantasy with wrestling to produce a very unique product, not unlike Kaiju Big Battel.

For an example, this is how they describe one of their wrestlers, Sol Invictus:

“The omnipotent Sol Invictus is a domineering solar deity, seeking any opportunity to demonstrate his power. Not only does he prey upon the unsuspecting San Diegan sun bather, but loves to deliver solar suplexes on the battle grid to any mortal foolish enough to challenge his power! Beware of the Solar Flare!!”

There were times in the San Diego area when either no one was running regularly and months would go by without a show, or the shows that were running were suspect at best. Now there is such an abundance that if you are a wrestling fan you may have to make hard decisions. All three shows on Saturday different stylistically, so if you are into lucha libre, American, or something more original, you have that choice. It is amazing to think about the variety available in the San Diego area compared to just a few years ago.
