New Japan Pro Wrestling is returning to Southern California in January. It was announced at today’s World Tag League press conference in Japan that the promotion will be running in Los Angeles, CA on Wednesday, January 30, 2019. Their event will be held at the Globe Theater, the home of Pro Wrestling Guerrilla.
The show will be part of New Japan Pro Wrestling’s two-city New Beginning in USA tour. They will also be holding an event on February 1, 2019 in Charlotte, NC.
The New Beginning in USA tour will be taking place around the same time as the promotion’s New Beginning in Sapporo events in Japan on February 2 and 3 Japan time, and will feature New Japan wrestler’s not booked for the shows in Sapporo.
The shows will be similar in vain to the New Japan Pro Wrestling events that were part of Chara Expo USA that were held in Anaheim last month. The Chara Expo events featured a mixture of New Japan talent and members of New Japan Pro Wrestling’s LA Dojo.
The Los Angeles event will mark New Japan’s eighth events in the United States since they began their expansion efforts, and their seventh event in Southern California (not including an event at the LA Dojo).
The Globe will mark the smallest venue that New Japan has held an event at in the United States. The venue seats around 700 for Pro Wrestling Guerrilla events. While there was some initial speculation that New Japan running at the Globe means there is some agreement between PWG and NJPW, we have learned that PWG was unaware of the event until it was announced at the press conference.
This event will also mark the first time New Japan Pro Wrestling has actually run in the city of Los Angeles, with the previous events taking place in Long Beach, San Francisco, and Anaheim.
Tickets for the event will go on sale on December 22 at 10:00 a.m. PST.
