Southern California College Wrestling News & Notes 11/13/2018

In today’s round up of the latest collegiate wrestling news from around Southern California we take a look at CSU Bakersfield’s big Midwest trip, some first time victories for local programs, all of the past weekend’s scores. Click for today’s Southern California college wrestling update.

CSU Bakersfield

The Roadrunners traveled back east for the toughest part of their schedule last weekend, where they went 1-3. On Friday, CSU Bakersfield started off the day with a 17-16 victory over the Golden Flashes of Kent State at the Frenzy at the Field House.  The Roadrunners were defeated by No. 3 Iowa 36-3 and No. 18 Wisconsin 28-12 in their second and third duals of the evening.  CSU Bakersfield’s Russell Rohlfing had a huge day, scoring an upset of Iowa’s Pat Lugo, who was ranked sixth in the country in the 149-pound weight class.

CSUB 17, Kent State 16 – November 9, 2018 – Kent, OH

Against Kent State, The Roadrunners were trailing 16-14 in the team standings heading into the heavyweight bout, the final bout of the meet. CSU Bakersfield’s Jacob Sieder scored a 7-2 decision over the Kent State’s Billy Bolia to clinch the 17-16 victory for the Roadrunners.

CSU Bakersfield’s Sean Nickell, who was ranked 13th in the nation by FloWrestling in the 133-pound weight class, won a 3-0 shutout in the second match of the meet, earning a penalty point, a third period escape and a point for riding time.

The Iowa Hawkeyes featured seven wrestlers who were nationally ranked in their lineup, and easily took care of the Roadrunners. CSU Bakersfield’s Russell Rohlfing scored the only victory of the meet for The Roadrunners when he upset sixth ranked Pat Lugo.

The Roadrunners fared slightly better against the number eighteen Badgers, with Wyatt Gerl and Mark Penyacsek picking up wins, as well as Nickell getting a forfeit win.

Pittsburgh 32, CSUB 4 – November 10, 2018 – Pittsburgh, PA

The Roadrunners closed out their road trip with a defeat at Pittsburgh, who has been receiving votes in the national polls. Russell Rohlfing earned the only victory of the meet for the Roadrunners and with a dominant 17-3 major victory over Dallas Bulsak, capping off his impressive weekend.

After the weekend, Russell Rohlfing entered the FloWrestling national rankings at No. 18 in the 149-pound weight class. Sean Nickell fell to No. 18 in the rankings for the 133-pound weight class.

CSU Bakersfield will be hosting the eighth annual Roadrunner 0pen on November 18 at 10:00 a.m. North Dakota State, Stanford, Oregon State, and Fresno State will be joining the Roadrunners at the event.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo

The Mustangs opened their season with a 28-10 loss to Cal Baptist. Yoshito Funakoshi, Brawley Lamer and Tom Lane earned the only three decisions for the Mustangs.

Cal Poly will next travel to a tournament hosted by Army West Point on November 18.

California Baptist University

Cal Baptist’s 28-10 win over Cal Poly was their first victory as a NCAA Division-1 program. The Lancers moved up to Division-1 this season after previously competing at the Division-2 level. CBU won seven of the ten matches at the meet.

Cal Baptist hosts #2 Ohio State on November 16 and then will take part in CSU Bakersfield’s Roadrunner Open on November 18.

Life Pacific College

Life Pacific defeated Mt. Sac 25-18 in the first wrestling dual ever hosted by the school. It was also the first victory in the wrestling program’s short history. Mt. Sac is the #3 ranked community college in California. The Warriors will next travel to Embry-Riddle University on November 16.
