In 2001, the Southern California Pro-Wrestling Hall of Fame inducted its first class of Legends into what would become a regular annual induction of Southern California’s finest wrestlers from World Wrestling Alliance, National Wrestling Alliance, American Wrestling Association, Extreme Championship Wrestling, World Championship Wrestling, and World Wrestling Entertainment. The names in the Hall transcend styles of wrestling and time. The names honored in the Hall are guys like Freddie Blassie, Gorgeous George, Lou Thez, Rowdy Roddy Piper, Ed “the Strangler” Lewis, Mil Mascaras, “Judo” Gene LeBell, John Tolos, El Hijo De Santo, and EWF’s own Jesse Hernandez. And then it hit me when I was reading through Steve’s Wrestler of the Decade thread on the forums. As we look back on the past decade, will those wrestlers, venues, promoters, ever become eligible for the Southern California Pro-Wrestling Hall of Fame? Could Super Dragon and Joey Ryan have their names next to Tolos and Mascaras? I have heard quiet rumblings that the Hall Of Fame could become active again real soon. I am looking forward to it.NWA Pro/M1W presents “Friday Night Fight” from the American Sports Center in Anaheim. However, this Friday Night might be a little more special than the others. Mach-1 will be celebrating its second anniversary that night. M1W has quickly becoming one of the most active wrestling promotions in Southern California with its weekly shows and the addition of the Student’s Showcase on Saturday Mornings. Aside from its weekly shows at the American Sports Center, M1W, also has become home to “Wrestling 101” with instructors Joey Ryan and Johnny Goodtime. Mach-1 and Wrestling 101 was honored recently when TNA Wrestling reached an agreement to use M1W as a Talent Scout and Training Center for TNA. TNA Knockout and daughter of the Legendary Wrestling Family Lacey Von Erich.
Also Friday night, marks the return of one of SoCal’s favorite sons, Rising Son. For those who are unfamiliar with Son he wrestles a style not unlike Rey Misterio. Son had wrestled in PWG, XPW, AWS, Rev X, and of course Rev Pro. His finesse in the ring made him very popular. He was often the partner and nemesis of Super Dragon. My first Revolution Pro show at the Norwalk Indoor Swapmeet was the first time I ever saw Rising Son and I’m looking forward to his return. Welcome back Rising Son.
Did you read the Bobby Marshall Interview? I enjoyed it. Marshall has spent a lot of time out here in SoCal and I thought it was really interesting where Marshall talks about how in SoCal he works a couple of times a week, but in Australia he gets at most a show or two a month. When the Australians like Marshall, or Mikey Nicholls, or Shane Haste have been in SoCal they always seem real polished, its hard to believe they one work a few times a month. I would like to give a special thanks to Tez and the Westside Pro Wrestling Newsletter for the Interview.
