Pro Wrestling Guerrilla presents Pearl Habra on Sunday, January 27, 2008!
By Silverback, Pro Wrestling Guerrilla Staff Writer
Laguna Niguel, CA – It sure seems like every few months, there will be some event that puts Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (http://www.prowrestlingguerrilla.com) on its’ ear, or shakes its’ foundation, or rocks Pro Wrestling Guerrilla to its’ very core. In that case, All Star Weekend 6 was business as usually, since Low Ki unexpectedly appeared, and the emerged from the weekend as Pro Wrestling Guerrilla World Champion. After Commissioner of Wrestling Dino Winwood conveniently had “car trouble” on the way to the first night of All Star Weekend 6, Commissioner of Food & Beverage Excalibur revealed that he had struck a last minute deal to bring Low Ki back to Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, and since Dino was not present, Excalibur would be changing the lineup for the events. It’s extremely coincidental that this series of events occurred as they did, since it was later revealed that one of Low Ki’s conditions for returning to Pro Wrestling Guerrilla was that he would be granted a title shot, which, lo(w — get it? That’s a pune, or a play on words) and behold, happened on the very night he returned. While Low Ki’s appearance surprised nearly everyone in the Van Nuys Armory, there was no one more surprised than “American Dragon” Bryan Danielson, who at that very moment, was still Pro Wrestling Guerrilla World Champion.Low Ki used the element of surprise to catch Danielson off guard, and ultimately defeated him after a brutal contest in order to capture the World title. With the title picture give an Etch-A-Sketch-like shaking due to Low Ki’s victory, Commissioner Dino Winwood has been forced to try and make sense of it all. After his near death experience while on the road to All Star Weekend 6, Dino was forced to confront the fragility of life, and the fact that what you leave behind on earth is only limited by the amount of time you have. “Hey man, make the most of your opportunities! There are no second chances, there are an unlimited number of chances to make you the best you that you can be!” said Winwood. While the Commissioner of Food & Beverage doesn’t agree with this philosophy, former champion Bryan Danielson would not speak to Excalibur, and ignored the request for a rematch. So the match was Dino’s to make, and he took the opportunity to give his friend and former World Champion El Generico a shot at the title at Pearl Habra!
Pro Wrestling Guerrilla’s Pearl Habra takes place on Sunday, January 27, 2008 at 2:00PM at The Gym at the Park in La Habra Heights, CA. The Gym at the Park is located at 1885 Hacienda Rd., La Habra Heights, CA 90631. Please note this event has a 2:00PM bell time. Pearl Habra is scheduled to feature:
Pro Wrestling Guerrilla World Championship Title Match
Low Ki (c) vs. El Generico
— As mentioned before, Low Ki’s appearance at All Star Weekend 6 was shocking, and his victory over “American Dragon” Bryan Danielson for the World title was even more so. In only his third appearance with Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, Low Ki was able to accomplish what other wrestlers have spent nearly the past five years striving for by winning the Pro Wrestling Guerrilla World championship. Because he is so new to Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, Low Ki’s list of fresh matches reads like a Who’s Who of Pro Wrestling Guerrilla. His first challenger for the title is one of the most popular wrestlers in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, and the only man to hold both the singles and tag titles simultaneously, El Generico. Since European Vacation II, El Generico had been struggling to regain his footing in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, but after having success at All Star Weekend, Commissioner Winwood is giving El Generico a chance to continue his winning ways. While Low Ki was able to catch Bryan Danielson off-guard in order to defeat him, the same can’t be said for El Generico. Both men will have ample time to prepare a strategy for their opponents, but will strategy alone be enough for either man?
Pro Wrestling Guerrilla World Tag Team Championship Title Match
Super Dragon & Davey Richards (c) vs. The Dynasty (“The Professional” Scott Lost & Joey Ryan, with Jade Chung)
— Ever since Super Dragon and Davey Richards captured the World Tag Team titles in England on the European Vacation II tour, “The Professional” Scott Lost and Joey Ryan have been next in line for a shot at the title. When Davey Richards’ Drunk and Disorderly charges (which were later dropped) kept him out of action in December, and a tour with Pro Wrestling NOAH prevented him from attending All Star Weekend 6, it seems like The Dynasty would never get their title shot. But luckily for The Dynasty, they were prepared to do whatever it took in order to get a shot at the World Tag Team titles, and that’s exactly what they did. Even though Joey Ryan alleges that Dragon & Richards have been dodging The Dynasty, Davey Richards maintains he is eager to test whether or not his once seemingly unstoppable team can duplicate their previous title reign. And what better way for the champions to assert their dominance by defeating two of the men responsible for ending their title reign? While Dragon & Richards are champions, they have not teamed together since European Vacation II. The Dynasty, on the other hand, has defeated some of the top teams in the world, and appear to be working like a well oiled machine. Will classic tag team wrestling prevail, or will brute force once again rule the day in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla? Find out at Pearl Habra on January 27!
No Disqualification Match
Chris Hero (with Candice LeRae) vs. Human Tornado
— All Star Weekend will be forever known as “Zero Star Weekend” for Chris Hero. On the first night of All Star Weekend 6, Hero was defeated in a crucial match, one that carried a stipulation that would end up pitting Candice LeRae against Human Tornado one-on-one with Hero barred from ringside. Then on Sunday night, in a match with Eddie Kingston, Hero suffered a knee injury while delivering a neckbreaker to Kingston, a move he has done probably 400 times in his career. Though Hero was able to tough it out and very narrowly defeat Kingston, the damage had been done. On top of the injury, Hero was then forced to stay backstage and look on as Human Tornado brutalized Candice LeRae, until it finally became too much to endure and Hero made his way to ringside to help Candice, costing her the match in the process. But upon coming to Candice’s aid, Hero was blindsided by Eddie Kingston, who used the opportunity to further attack Hero’s already weakened knee. This ultimately forced Hero to seek medical attention for his knee, and it was at that Tarzana Medical Center where he found out he had suffered a partially torn MCL. Truly, for Chris Hero, on the Five Star scale, it was a “Zero Star Weekend.”
Hero swears he is ready to return to the ring, despite his physician’s insistence that he wear a knee brace to perform even the most menial tasks, such as navigating stairs. Disregarding the advice of the best doctors Metropolis has to offer, Chris Hero intends to make Human Tornado pay a price for his actions not only at All Star Weekend, but for the past 9 months, as well. Hero demanded the opportunity to inflict the same type of punishment on Tornado that he inflicted on Candice at All Star Weekend 6, and that is exactly the opportunity he will receive. Anything, or anyone is legal in a No Disqualification match, so Chris Hero plans on using crutches, a knee brace, and even a wheel chair if need be to soften up Human Tornado. However, with Hero’s knee problems well publicized, the smart money would be on Human Tornado looking to exploit the injury. Hero may think he’s ready for the next step in his battle with Human Tornado, but he could end up paying a much higher price than a mark in the Win-Loss column.
Final Best of 3 Series Number One Contender Match – Best 2-out-of-3 Falls
Jack Evans vs. Roderick Strong
— After All Star Weekend 6, each man held one victory a piece, so at Pearl Habra, Jack Evans and Roderick Strong will meet to determine who is the Number One Contender for the Pro Wrestling Guerrilla World Championship. To raise the stakes even more, Commissioner Winwood has dusted off the Best 2-out-of-3 falls stipulation for this match. Neither man has faced Low Ki in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, but both men have defeated El Generico in recent months, so it is likely that both participants in the Number One Contender match will be pulling for Generico. Who will be the next man to challenge for the Pro Wrestling Guerrilla World Championship title? Find out on January 27!
DDT4 Qualifier Round Robin Series
Los Luchas (Phoenix Star & Zokre) vs. Ronin & Scorpio Sky
Hook Bomberry & TJ Perkins vs. The Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson)
— Commissioners Winwood and Excalibur have decided to make the Dynamite Duumvirate Tag Team Title Tournament (DDT4) a regular occurrence for Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, so in May 2008, the best tag teams from around the world will compete for a shot at the Tag Team titles. In order to invigorate the Tag Team division in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, the Commissioners decided to hold a series of matches leading up to the tournament, with the winning team of the series securing a guaranteed spot in DDT4, and a gift card of yet to be determined value for Westfield Shopping Centers. Matt and Nick Jackson, The Young Bucks, were natural choices for the first team in the Four Team Round Robin contest, and after their impressive effort at the 2007 Battle of Los Angeles, Los Luchas (Phoenix Star and Zokre) were the second team to be named. While those were easy choices, the Commissioners were looking for two more teams to enter, so word of the guaranteed entry (and the gift card [possibly plural]) spread.
Quickly, Scorpio Sky and Ronin came forward to toss their hats into the ring, despite their last appearance in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla pitting them against one another. When asked about it, Scorpio Sky replied “When Ronin and I met at All Star Weekend 6, it was like old times, when we were first starting out, training together. We brought out a good side of each other, and I think as a team, we can do even more. Plus I’ve had my eye on this new belt, but it’s so impractical, I can’t bring myself to buy it.” What did Scorpio Sky’s belt gesture after his match at All Star Weekend mean? “At first, I had my eye on getting back into the title picture, any title picture in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla. But now I guess you could say it had two meanings.” said Sky.
With one team remaining, who would step forward and claim the final spot? TJ Perkins was the last to answer the call, putting his name forward for the contest. When asked who he planned on teaming with for the DDT4 Qualifier Round Robin Series, Perkins quietly mumbled something that sounded like “Look, Don Cherry!” After taking a minute to see if the Canadian Broadcasting great was in his vicinity, Excalibur asked if Perkins planned on teaming with Hook Bomberry, the only man to violate the previously non-existant Pro Wrestling Guerrilla Wellness Policy. “He’s cleaned up his act, seriously. I’d stake my reputation on it.” said Perkins. After much cajoling, and the promise that Perkins would look in to hiring Don Cherry for a guest announcing spot, Hook Bomberry’s suspension was lifted, and he completed the final team to enter in the Qualifier.
On January 27 at Pearl Habra, the road to May begins with the first stage of the DDT4 Qualifier Round Robin Series!
Plus Rocky “Azúcar” Romero returns to Pro Wrestling Guerrilla to take on Karl “Machine Gun” Anderson! With Commissioner of Wrestling Dino Winwood, and Commissioner of Food & Beverage Excalibur on hand to oversee all the action!
