Brandon Gatson began training at the School Of Hard Knocks, owned and operated by Jesse Hernandez and made his professional wrestling debut in 2000, competing under the name Brandon Nitro until 2007 when he began to wrestle as Brandon Gatson. On April 27, 2007, Gatson and his tag team partner Johnny Dynamite would go on to win the EWF Tag Team Championship. Gatson would go on to win the 2007 Inland Title Series and later on the EWF Heavyweight Championship. Gatson would make his debut for Pro Wrestling Guerrilla on July 31, 2009. At the 2009 Battle of Los Angeles tournament, Gatson would advance to the semifinals of the tournament after defeating Nick Jaskon and Alex Shelley before losing to Roderick Strong. He would go on to the semifinals again in the 2010 Battle of Los Angeles where he defeated Ryan Taylor and Brandon Bonham before losing to Chris Hero.
