It's really just a collection of the planet's satellite photos mapped onto a sphere, with automatically adjusting resolutions while you look. The details are really good but you can't see your own house or anything, and it's not real time.
Definitely worth the 10 MB download. I play around with it quite a bit, and examine the differences between city layouts in various countries. It's also useful for seeing the driving distance and road size between places, so the incorporated driving directions addition is even more helpul.
