From Cauliflower Alley Club.....
Edward “Eddie” Fatu was a Samoan-American professional wrestler better known by his ring name Umaga.Fatu was hospitalized in what was described as life threatening condition after he apparently fell asleep on December 3, 2009 while watching television. Several hours later, his wife found him not breathing and he was rushed to the hospital where he passed away. He was best known for his time with World Wrestling Entertainment, where he was a two-time Intercontinental Champion. He was a member of the Anoa’i wrestling family and frequently worked as a part of a tag team – variously named The Island Boyz, the Samoan Gangstas, and 3-Minute Warning – with his cousin Matt Anoa’i. Fatu was born in American Samoa, a member of the famous Anoa’i wrestling family. His mother, Vera, was the sister of Afa and Sika of the Wild Samoans, and his later Umaga gimmick would be compared to their “wildness”. His two older brothers, Sam (better known as Tonga Kid and Tama) and Solofa Jr. (better known as Rikishi), are also professional wrestlers who have achieved success of their own. |

Speechless...just speechless. This has certainly been a bad year for pro wrestling as an industry when it comes to all these unexpected deaths.

Now I'm no doctor, though I did get some med school education, but after reading various reports, it sounds like he had some kind of respiratory/circulatory condition where he had difficulty breathing, and blood coming out of his nose. It could be a number of things, like a clot that caused blood to stop flowing through parts of his lungs, or congestive heart failure, or something else. Either way, what a sad way to go for a man who was such a beast in the WWE, and I'm sure that Rikishi and some others will have plenty to say at the Knokx Pro show.

I copied and pasted this from Lords of Pain:
WXW C4's Statement On The Passing Of Eki "Umaga" Fatu 12/04/09 - On behalf of the Anoai Family and front office of WXW C4 it is our sad duty to announce that earlier today, December 4th, we lost another member of not only our wrestling family, but immediate family. Eki "Umaga" Fatu passed away today in Houston at the age of 36. While we mourn the passing of Eki, we also remember all the good times that we were able to share with him and the smiles on the millions of fans faces around the world when he walked to the ring to do what he loved most: wrestle. During this difficult time, we please ask for the fans and the press to respect the privacy of his family during this tough time. When there is more information to be made public, his family will do so. The worst thing that could happen would be to have false information about this horrible situation out there, only to make the situation even worse. We'd like to thank everyone for their sympathy and prayers and ask that everyone celebrate the life of Eki Fatu. |

My thoughts on the man known as Umaga.
I know its been a while since I have posted on here but after I heard about Eddie Fatu, I had to write.
It was about 2001 when I got a call to go wrestle in some town I never heard of called Visalia. I was told I would be wrestling the Sultan from the old WWF days. Turned out to be Eddie. He was real cool and we worked out some cool stuff for the show. I can honestly say THIS WAS THE STRONGEST GUY I EVER WRESTLED! We were working and he said "lets go outside and waste some time." He slammed me (outside) , I waited, looked up and saw him settin up a table. He put his right hand on my throat, left under my arm pit, picked me up, let go with his left hand, and held me for a good five seconds before he slammed me through it. Needless to say I was impressed. Even had a good time with all the "Samoans" having a few beers in the hotel bar. Thats what wrestling to me was all about. I dont watch much wrestling on tv anymore but when Umaga was on I dam sure took the time to peep it out. Dude was Bad Ass in Japan. I wish his family well and am glad I had at least that one good memory............Peace. |
