SoCal set to explode?

I'm really curious as to what actual SoCalers think about this. Lately, I've been wondering jsut waht it'll take for the SoCal scene to get national exposure. I know the scene is big, but coming from the East Coast standards, it really isn't that covered or exposed to the masses. It's not out of quality or anything, as there is definatly great shit out here, but I can;t quite figure out what it is.

I think it's rooted in the ECW tradtion on the East Coast. Ever since ECW, the internet hasd been a huge tool in getting East Coast stuff over. It's just the preferred form of communication. I think that has carried over to modern indies, and they use the net effectively as a tool for exposure. So in that sense, the names are out there.

To my uneducated self, I don't see that coming out of SoCal. There doesn't seem to be promotion on the opposite coast. Why is that?

I do think that PWG is doing a great job at turning some heads though. Very purposely, they are booking huge East Coast names to draw in a bigger fan base. I do believe the tactic will work, though it has failed in the past. The exposure is pretty monumental as far as SoCal feds getting watched on the East Coast, and I think something big could come out of it.

So here we are at the original question. Do you think with the growing coverage and interest in PWG, that the SoCal scene is about to explode internationally? I am curious as to what you guys think.

Everything on the East Coast has always gotten more media hype. Same happens in college football, as west coast teams never get the hype they deserve.

PWG may be booking East Coast names, but it hasn't really translated to anything in terms of attendance. Rev Pro rarely books anyone from outside SoCal and I'd say their tape sales would be compareable to PWG's.

I think a lot of times net hype is over rated and means less than people think. I agree it's a very important tool, but how often do you read about Lucha Va Voom and UPW on the net, and look at their average attendance figures. I mean you'd be hard pressed to find any other indy drawing 1,750 to a show.

A lot has to do with what sites you are reading too. Obviously if you read websites that focus on East Coast feds, there won't be a lot of West Coast hype. The same applies in reverse. When APW LA booked Sonjay Dutt he got little reaction.

There's also the problem that SoCal is pretty much an island. On the East Coast a lot of places are within driving distance from others. Like you can drive from NYC to Philly for a show, but out west everything is much more spread out. Plus the population is a lot denser. Most people aren't going to drive six hours for shows, thus less exposure that way.

In closing Internet hype is over rated.

Oddly enough there's a lot of big talk going on right now. We'll soon discover that some promotions are prepared to test the television markets, whether it be for the first time or to have another go at it. Television done right is instant momentum. Fuck it up and there's just more people to laugh at you. Most would agree that WW...E( still hate to call them that) is boring the life out of the masses. Some promotions are very grateful for this. Did anyone call NWA-TNA's lifespan going this far? Hell no. Most of us thought $10 PPVs every week was the fast track to the shitter. But their product is better because they take chances on kids with heart. McMahon's bunch feel unthreatened, so their product is weak and predictable. A year and a half? Two years? How long has NWA-TNA been around now? I guess people really do want more than one item on the menu.

1) East Coast gets much more coeverage and recognition because there are more fans in the East then here. Obviously they are going to put over the stuff they go to rather then the stuff 3000 miles away which most never see.

2) The best thing PWG has going (besides ood wrestling) is that they are getting DVDs out...quickly. After a year or two at this pace...I think that they would get alot more recognition, and would be considered THE west coast promotion by east coasters...more so then XPW was.

3) I beleive TNA has been going for 18 months about...I could be wrong.

Epic's legacy is that introduced me to the socal wrestling scene that i had no idea existed. I had already stopped regular WWF viewing and just happened to be flipping channels. A well placed banner and commentary told me it was in the area. The end of show plug for epic's website had a link to socaluncensored.com!

While I agree with this statement, I am confused by Steve saying it. I could be wrong, but in the past haven't you called for feds to do more internet angles, use the web instead of tv, and preeched how most feds don't use the web to their advantage?

I believe internet fan base accounts for and represents a small group of people that attend the same shows every month (or boycott the same shows every month). Yet these fans are the most critical, influencial, two faced group out of all fans.

Lucha Va Voom, UPW and the late XPW proved that to draw high triple or quad digits you have to flyer to the masses, ie: sporting events, concerts, high schools, etc. Relying on the internet and flyering other indy shows will most likely get you the same group of Indy fans over and over again.

As far as Socal blowing up.....not likely. Whats new, original or interesting? What is one fed providing that different than the dozen other feds in socal? Everyone uses the same guys, none of them look or run in a professional looking venue, no deathmatches, no big name stars, no big attendance figures. The only one close to this is UPW and in my opinion, if they were gonna blowup..it would have happened already.

I wouldn't consider a promotion using it's website to push angles etc. Internet hype. I'm reffering to talk on message boards etc.

A SoCal fed on TV? (hopefully it's not Cable Access or something) It's about time really. Every other wrestling hot spot seems to have a few Indy TV shows, why not SoCal?

2. The reason why the SoCal scene hasn't exploded is because this region is surely outgunned by the Northeast, outgunned on the net sheets and outgunned on tape distribution. Once there is a lot more hype on the net, and once people read into the hype, AND ONCE people buy the tapes and dvds and get sold on the product, then this scene will explode.

Give this man a cee-gar! Scrub-a-dub-dub's point of "attendance is nice, but let's make a great tape/dvd and get it distributed nationwide" is the key. This is the "Marijuana that leads to Cocaine to Heroin" stepping stone philosophy.
All of a sudden you can afford local t.v. or hire more talent, then some guys in Sheboygan buy your product at their local video store and love it. Locals then come to shows they never knew existed. Then you get the women, then you get the power.
ECW built themselves up on word of mouth and product availability, as could any respectable Fed that conducts business this way. Internet sales are nice because it's easy to do, but getting into stores seems to produce bigger numbers.
I see that PWG has their shit together in this respect, especially since their cards seldom have any weak spots. Getting the shows cut and packaged quickly is great, too. Once they get distribution, they'll have more cash flow. The checks might not come for the first 4-6 months, but once they do, they'll have more options regarding their growth.
Even promotions with okay product do well when television and distribution come into play. To sum up: MONEY GOOD!
