WWA Tijuana, MX live report – Santo vs. Super Parka mask match
October 10th, 2003

The show started at 8:30 PM, so we arrived at about 7:45 and there were thousands of people out in front of the venue still. While waiting in line for tickets (there were some reports floor seats were sold out in advance, but they were still on sale when we arrived) we could here the start of the first match. Normally in Tijuana the first couple matches on the show are pretty terrible, so I wasn’t really worried about missing much. After purchasing tickets, we had to wait in another line to get in, as my group was in this line, the second match took place.

Because of the amount of people expected for this show, the venue was Toreo de Tijuana, which is a stadium where bullfighting takes place, rather than the 6,000 or so seat Auditorio de Tijuana. AAA ran Triplemania there a few years ago. Anyway, the Toreo holds about 13,500 people. When we got in the place was pretty packed in the general admission section, though there was some room towards the top. Also the very top section of the stadium was never opened. By the end of the night I’d say there was probably around 9,000 people there, maybe a little more.

Pandilero 1, Pandilero 2, & Catedratico over Huracan Negro, Principe Arandu, & Tornado Negro (2 falls to 1)
Since I missed the first two matches, I have no idea who wrestled as I haven’t seen results at all yet. This match was fairly bad, with Huracan Negro blowing spots in the most hilarious fashion ever, including tripping over the ropes and completely missing on a dive. No one in the match looked very good, but the crowd seemed pretty in to it. The rudo team of Los Pandileros and Catedratico won the first and third falls.

Villano IV & Villano V over Steve Masters & Ragin' Dawg (1 fall)
This was the first match of a tag team tournament. It was advertised as being for the WWA tag team titles, but since there were no titles present I’m not sure if it ended up being that way. Before the match the captains of each team, and Jesse Hernandez who is the promoter of EWF in Southern California and a former WWF referee, came out for a coin toss to see who would be facing who in the first round. Steve Masters and Ragin’ Dawg drew Villano III and IV so the other captains leave and Ragin’ Dawg and the Villano who wasn’t the captain come to the ring and we are under way. There wasn’t a whole lot to this match, as it was fairy short being one fall and all. Jesse Hernandez, who was acting as the manager for Dawg and Masters got involved a little, and was laid out for his troubles. The Villanos were able to win pretty easily, and post match Steve Masters said something, which the ring announcer translated to the crowd which lead to a very loud angry reaction from the crowd.

Dos Caras & Dos Caras Jr. over Cobarde & Hijo del Cobarde (1 fall)
This was the other first round match of the tournament. While it was a little better than the other first round match, it was still fairly short and uneventful. Most of the match was Dos Caras Sr. getting the advantage over Cobarde, leading to Hijo del Cobarde sneaking in to attack Caras, which lead to Caras Jr. trying to get in the ring, and then the ref stopping him. Eventually Caras Jr. got a hold of Hijo del Cobarde and it was over.

Villano IV & Villano V over Dos Caras & Dos Caras Jr. (1 fall)
The finals of the tournament was a little more interesting. Dos Caras Jr. tried to work some shoot techniques into the match, even having one of the Villanos tap out to the arm bar, but in the end I guess the other Villano was too much for Caras Jr., as he was able to get the pin. This match was pretty short like the other tournament matches, but I guess if you put them all together as one match it was about normal length.

Perro Aguayo Jr. & Arana over El Dandy & Inferno (2 falls to 1)
Perro Aguayo Jr. was insanely over in this match, but the real star was Arana, who was basically Spiderman. He wore a complete Spiderman costume and did moves just like Spiderman. At one point he did a flip, and I thought he landed wrong at first, but then I realized he was doing the Spiderman crouching pose! However he didn’t shoot any webs, so he lost points there. The technico team of Perro Aguayo Jr. and Spiderman won the first and third falls. After the match Perro Aguayo Jr. and El Dandy were cutting promos and Perro Aguayo Jr. challenged him to a fight right there, but El Dandy opted to leave instead.

Hijo del Santo over Super Parka to capture Super Parka's mask (2 falls to 1)
This was the match everyone came to see. All of the lights dimmed and an Aztec warrior carrying a torch came to the ring. This was followed by Santo coming down to the ring accompanied by two Aztec women. Once in the ring the Aztecs began to dance around with the torches as Santo stood in the corner. Then the warriors handed off their torches, and then red lights lit up all over their Aztec gear and techno music started as they began to rave. All this was happening with Santo standing in the middle of them with his hands raised to the air. Craziest thing I have ever seen at a wrestling show.

Super Parka then came to the ring and danced around a little bit, but nothing too elaborate, and certainly no raving Aztecs. Super Parka quickly became the heel of the match when he demanded that it only be a one fall match. Santo got on the mic and said “this in Mexico, and in Mexico it is our tradition to do three falls” (translated from Spanish of course). Eventually Super Parka agreed to the three falls.

Super Parka quickly dominated the opening fall, cutting Santo very early in the match. Santo was bleeding pretty good in his mask and the crowd was going crazy. Super Parka dominated the entire fall, though Santo did hit one tope. Super Parka hit Santo with a low blow and the heel ref counted a quick three. Due to the heel ref the crowd was going crazy. Fans began throwing objects into the ring at Super Parka and the ref. An official then came from the back and demanded that the refs be switched. The heel ref was sent to the back, and a new ref came out. On his way to the back the heel ref was even punched in the head by a fan.

The second fall was more of Super Parka dominating Santo. Super Parka brought a floorboard from outside the ring into the ring, and threw Santo into it several times, but it never broke. Santo was able to recover and finally mount some offense against Super Parka, including at one point throwing Super Parka outside of the ring, then going through the ropes and hitting a senton bomb on Super Parka. Santo was able to win the second fall.

The third fall was built around Santo trying to get Super Parka into the camel clutch, with Parka fighting out of it every time. The floorboard was used some more, but Santo was able to reverse it this time and throw Super Parka into the board, breaking it in two. As Parka was sandwiched between the two parts of the board, Santo dropkicked the top board. Santo kept trying to get Parka into the camel clutch, but could never quite pull it off. At one point they did the ECW style multiple pinfall reversal where they just kept reversing every pin attempt and rolling into one by the other guy. After a long battle, Santo was able to lock the camel clutch on Parka for the win, and Super Parka was forced to de-mask. Santo posed with Super Parka’s mask and the show ended.

Overall the show was pretty lackluster, but the main event more than made up for the rest of the show. The amount of heat the match generated was amazing. A lot of people I’ve talked to asked if anyone was there taping the show, and while I didn’t see anyone in the audience taping it, there were professional cameras there taping the show. I hear they may show clips of the main on WWA’s TV show, but will hold off on showing the match in it’s entirety for awhile, but I could be wrong.

Just a few other notes. Getting a cab back from the Toreo was a lot easier than expected, and for some reason cheaper than the cab ride to the Toreo. Also, XPWTV Sean almost got to spend a night in Mexican jail getting raped and beaten as some cop grabbed him and asked him if he "threw weed on the ground". Luckily the cops let him go, and Sean is in good health today.
