Lucha Underground Season 4, Episode 7: The Gift That Keeps On Giving

We start with a recap of events that have happened in previous episodes. After the recap, we see shots of Los Angeles and the exterior of the Ice Temple as Metalachi played a song. Vampiro and Matt Striker welcomed the audience to the show and went over the lineup. There was also a medical update on Famous B. Doctors were able to save his leg, and you can send him get well wishes by calling 423-Get-Fame.

“The Savage” Jake Strong vs. Sammy Guevara

The match opened up with Strong delivering a few German Suplexes on Guevara. Jake would control the match until Sammy countered a lariat attempt. The match would head outside of the ring where Jake regained control of the match. Guevara would end up climbing a ladder to the second level balcony of the Ice Temple as Strong chased after him and attempted to prevent him from going up. Once Guevara was at the top of the ladder, he hit a moonsault to the floor onto Strong. Guevara would gain some momentum before Strong put him in an Ankle Lock after countering a springboard move attempt from Guevara for the submission win.

After a commercial, we’re back at the Ice Temple. Vinnie Massaro was inside the ring for the next match. Antonio Cueto addressed Vinnie from the balcony. He talked about going over the contracts for Lucha Underground, and talked about firing Vinnie, calling him “that poor excuse of a man.” Instead, he said he ordered him a pizza for his performance in Aztec Warfare. A pizza delivery guy came out and gave Vinnie a pizza with pineapple on it. Disgusting. Antonio then made a Sacrifice To The Gods match. Matanza Cueto came out and beat up the pizza delivery guy to start the match.

Sacrifice To The Gods: Vinnie Massaro vs. Matanza Cueto

Vinnie would get some offense early on, landing several forearm strikes on Matanza. Vinnie would then run the ropes for a bit as Matanza stood in the middle of the ring. After gassing out, Vinnie tried to catch his breath before going for a rolling forearm strike. Matanza would counter with a headbutt, followed by Matanza hitting his finisher on Vinnie. After the match, the pizza guy tried to take Vinnie’s wallet. Matanza stared him down, and the pizza guy offered him Vinnie’s wallet. He received a chokeslam from Matanza and was then sacrificed along with Vinnie as we head into a commercial break.

After a commercial break, we head to the ring where Melissa Santos introduces the competitors in the Gift of the Gods Championship match. Before the main event began, Antonio Cueto came out and said there will be a three-way for the Gift of the Gods match instead of the scheduled six-person match. The competitors would be determined with a Trios Match. The winners would then advance to the championship match. Antonio Cueto put Cross and Ivelisse in a team and asked them to pick a partner. They picked The Mack.

Gift of the Gods Qualifier Match: The Mack, Son of Havoc, and Ivelisse vs. Dragon Azteca Jr., King Cuerno, and Dezmond X

The match began with The Mack having a showcase against the opposing team. During this, Killshot appeared at the entrance and looked on. Son of Havoc and Ivelisse would also get some offense before the opposing team worked over Ivelisse for heat. The Mack would get the hot tag and got some offense in, leading to him hitting a running twisting plancha to the opposing team outside of the ring. Son of Havoc would then follow up with a Sasuke Special. Inside the ring, Son of Havoc would go for a Shooting Star Press on King Cuerno, but Cuerno would move out of the way and hit a Samoan Driver to get the win for his team.

Mil Muertes ran out to ringside and attacked The Mack and Son of Havoc. Killshot would run down and attacked Son of Havoc. Mil Muertes would end up punching Killshot for his troubles as the show went to a commercial break.

Gift Of The Gods Championship Match: Dezmond X vs. El Dragon Azteca, Jr. King Cuerno

After a commercial break, the match began. King Cuerno controlled things early on. Dezmond X and Dragon Azteca would make some comebacks and had some offensive showcases of their own. After a dive sequence, the match would continue with two guys going at it while one watched with some three-way spots mixed in from time-to-time.

The match would head outside of the ring where the three brawled for a bit while mixing in some acrobatic spots. King Cuerno eventually controlled the match again for a bit. He picked up Dragon Azteca in a fireman’s carry position and was about to deliver a move before Dezmond X hit a dive from the balcony. Dezmond would send Dragon Azrecta inside the ring and missed an attempted corkscrew splash. The two would fight on the turnbuckle before Dragon Azteca hit a Victory Roll onto Dezmond X off the ropes for the win. Dragon Azteca would celebrate inside the ring after the match with the Gift of the Gods title.

Meanwhile, a sleeping Marty The Moth is dragged into an office. Mariposa poured a drink on him to wake him up. Marty talked about having a dream about giving Melissa Santos a necklace made of Pentagon Dark’s teeth. Mariposa told him he needs focus on what truly matters: the Lucha Underground Championship. Marty would then laugh like a psycho as the show ended.

Final Thoughts

The action was fine, but I wasn’t really a fan of the Gift of the Gods angle and changing up the main event before it was going to happen. I understand what Lucha Underground is going for, but I thought this wasn’t very good from a creative standpoint. The Killshot story seems like it has potential to be good. I can’t say the same about the direction of Marty The Moth though. Overall, this was an okay episode.
