SoCal News & Notes 10/18/2016

In today’s news and notes we look at SoCal Pro vs. Poway Football, another name confirmed for Lucha Underground “En Vivo” in Escondido, local wrestlers getting East Coast bookings, another women’s show coming to SoCal, and more. Click for the news and notes.

Last week during a 10 News in San Diego prep football segment, they featured a football player from Poway High School, Peter Neill, with a story about how in the off season he was in training to be a pro-wrestler. In the story he claimed that he had been training for the past 6 months, 3 days at week at SoCal Pro (identified in the story as SoCal Wrestling). Footage from a recent SoCal Pro event was shown a couple of times. The first sign that maybe something was amiss was Peter Neill explaining how he had been practicing “flops”. Apparently he did actually go to SoCal Pro’s school once, to check it out, but never stepped in the ring. SoCal Pro actually has him on video saying “my body won’t be able to handle this” and he never came back.

SoCal Pro was upset about the story, and started questioning it on social media. They have stated they were not made aware of the story beforehand nor were they ever contacted to verify its accuracy. SoCal Pro was not happy with the story as they don’t want people to think an untrained wrestler represents their training. 10 News removed the story, without issuing any updates are acknowledging it, and the school along with the football coach, Damian Gonzalez, began blocking anyone who mentioned it on social media. The student’s parents have also filed Facebook complaints to have SoCal Pro’s post about the issue removed. 10 News has not responded to any of SoCal Pro’s contact attempts, nor has the coach, or the school.

Maybe the most ironic part of the whole story is that on Poway High School football’s website, there is a quote by the coach that says “Football is the avenue that develops strong character, work ethic, discipline, team-work, and good sportsmanship. Our student athletes learn the importance of ethics and values while playing and understanding the great game of football.
