Jay Cal’s View #167: Raze’s View

Hey jerks! It’s Raze guest writing for Jay Cal this week as continues his lucrative career as a foot fetish model or whatever it is he does. Let’s get to it!

Don’t tell me how to live my life, Chopstix!!
Not long ago a column was written about the “State of Women’s Wrestling” with its focus on SoCal. Though the audience demographic for professional wrestling is males ages 25 – 44, I felt it brash that a guy who “is on the outside looking in” was reporting on this topic. That being said I find right now one of the best-worst times to be a female wrestler in SoCal.

At its worst: There are 14 female wrestlers in SoCal, though on any given weekend you will likely see one of the six females who wrestle 3 or more promotions on a daily basis. Currently there are very few promotions with built women’s divisions, four spots that support intergender wrestling, and two active female titles (OWA and AOW). Losing a few key promotions in recent months has been a severe blow to women’s wrestling here in SoCal.

At its best: We have a movement in women’s wrestling to build our collective product to continually be the best we can make it. One such byproduct of this movement is monthly women’s camps that have featured guest trainers such as Teddy Hart and Johnny Mundo. These camps, orchestrated thru UIPW promoter Cary, are open to ALL female wrestlers/trainees regardless of school – spread the word!

And, in my opinion, one of the best things to happen with women’s wrestling in SoCal recently is it being given a second shot at CWFH starting April 10th! Keep a lookout and show up to support the ladies!

The Great Drought of 2016
Aside from California’s continual drought, here is SoCal we’ve hit quite a hefty wrestling drought. With places that gave SoCal and the Los Angeles area a great deal of its regular wrestling shows and fly-in talents not currently running, wrestling fans are having to look harder and drive farther to get their fix. But are the side effects of this drought completely bad?

It seems that, due to the lack of local bookings, many wrestlers are now regularly traveling outside the tri-state trap (CA, AZ, NV); exposing themselves to new audiences, new opponents, and spreading their brand. Aside from our frequent flyers we have Ray Rosas, Pinky, and Peter Avalon making quite a few trips to New Mexico. Mikey O’Shea and Sage Sin recently wrestled in Oregon. Fidel Bravo and quite a few others have picked up bookings in Tijuana. Big Duke has taken to North Dakota. Ashley Grace has made rounds to Indiana, Texas, Oregon and Utah. I, myself, have set up camp in Louisiana and will be heading to New Mexico.

For now, wrestle fans, keep supporting local wrestling. Hopefully with time some of our missing promotions will return and restore our balance to the force…but for now I am very happy to see our local guys and gals putting California on display for the states to see!

Speaking of being on the road…
Have you ever wondered what it’s like being a traveling wrestler? No, it’s not all airplane selfies and hotel rooms; sometimes it’s very long drives in a crowded car full of other wrestlers who probably didn’t get to shower before you turn around and drive back home. Sometimes it’s delirium to the point where road signs become funny. Sometimes it’s road nausea, crappy gas station restrooms, and horrible food. Actually…all those scenarios are very familiar. Nothing illustrates this better than the recent episodes of The Rosas Report – you have to check it out! That’s all for now. Next week’s guest blogger is one of my favorite people so make sure you check it out and hey, if you like this, if you hate this, drop me a note on social media and let me know. You can find me on just about every social site under the name “Razerpops.” Till next time, jerks!
