Sabu Returns to SoCal

Sabu Autograph Flyer 6-22-131996 on what is now called Fox Sports Prime Ticket, the wrestling promotion that everyone was talking about in the infancy of the internet; Extreme Championship Wrestling would begin to showcase daredevil style of wrestling with the likes of Mikey Whipreck, Rob Van Damn, and Sabu. It was at this time Sabu began wowing audiences across the country with his “High Risk” style of wrestling. Paul E. Dangerously would dub him the “Homicidal, Suicidal, Genicidal, Death–Defying Man” Sabu. Of course by this time, Sabu had already wrestled across the globe competing in WCW, New Japan Pro Wrestling, FMW (Japan), but unfortunately his exposure in Southern California was limited. But across the world he was winning the NWA World Heavyweight Championship, the New Japan IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship, and countless championships in Extreme Championship Wrestling.

Sabu’s impact in Southern California had yet to come to fruition; it wasn’t until Xtreme Pro Wrestling began using the controversial wrestler that Southern California audiences would be treated to his “Evil Kinevel” style of wrestling. It was at XPW’s World Championship Tournament, in Bakersfield, where Sabu defeated Damien Steele and John Kronus to win the title. Sabu would go on to hold the XPW World Championship longer than any other XPW Champion and defended the Championship in the United Kingdom as well as Mexico. During his time as Champion, Sabu, was managed by Josh Lazie, who was the bassist of Danzing turned manager. Sabu’s time in Southern California were not just limited to XPW, he would also make appearances for the short lived EPIC, FCW, and various other promotions.
