The Curse of Guerrilla Island takes place October 9, 2010!

By Silverback, Pro Wrestling Guerrilla Staff Writer

Scabb Island, CA – When Davey Richards became Pro Wrestling Guerrilla World Champion earlier this year, it was a career-long dream fulfilled. However, just as Davey reached the pinnacle of his career in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, his career outside of the company was about to take a huge leap forward as well. In June, Davey was invited to compete in the Best of the Super Junior tournament by New Japan Pro Wrestling, and thanks to his stellar performance Davey earned himself a position as one of the company’s regular American wrestlers. While this is good for both Davey and the Japanese fans, it’s not so great for everyone else, Pro wrestling Guerrilla included. Because of his outside obligations Richards would be unable to attend any of the Pro Wrestling Guerrilla events for the rest of 2010. Therefore, due to his inability to defend the Pro Wrestling Guerrilla World Championship on a regular basis, Davey Richards has decided to abdicate the title.

While it is unfortunate for a champion to lose a title without actually losing the match, Richards felt it was fair not only to the other competitors, but the fans of Pro Wrestling Guerrilla for him to step aside and then attempt to reclaim the title when the timing is more favorable, rather than continue as a champion in absentia. With this announcement coming just days after the conclusion of the 2010 Battle of Los Angeles, it raises a very interesting set of questions. With his tournament victory and number one contendership, where does Joey Ryan stand in the title picture? Top contender? Interim champion? What about former World Champion and 2010 Battle of Los Angeles finalist Chris Hero? All of these questions, and many more, will be answered at Pro Wrestling Guerrilla’s The Curse of Guerrilla Island!

Pro Wrestling Guerrilla’s The Curse of Guerrilla Island takes place on Friday, October 9, 2010 at American Legion Post #308 in Reseda, CA. Front Row Tickets are $30 each, and General Admission Tickets are $25 each, and they are on sale now on the Pro Wrestling Guerrilla Ticket Page. Pro Wrestling Guerrilla’s The Curse of Guerrilla Island is scheduled to feature:

Pro Wrestling Guerrilla World Championship Title Four-Way Match
Claudio Castagnoli vs. Brandon Gatson vs. Chris Hero vs. Joey Ryan

— After enduring four torturous rounds over the course of two nights to win the 2010 Battle of Los Angeles, Joey Ryan thought his next match would be against Davey Richards for the World Championship. After all, Joey had to beat four of the top independent wrestlers in the world to get to this point, so the last thing he wants is for three other guys to waltz into a title shot because Davey Richards vacated the title. While the Pro Wrestling Guerrilla Board of Directors can certainly understand Joey’s position, a new champion must be crowned, and unfortunately, there is no clear Number Two contender for the title. Because of this, the title will be up for grabs in a four-way match at The Curse of Guerrilla Island.

However, that decision does not render Joey Ryan’s 2010 Battle of Los Angeles win completely meaningless. If Joey Ryan does not win the World Championship at The Curse of Guerrilla Island, he will still be able to challenge the newly crowned champion to a future title match. It is with that safety net that Joey Ryan accepts the match, as he will face off with Chris Hero, and the remaining two 2010 Battle of Los Angeles semi-finalists, Claudio Castagnoli and Brandon Gatson, to determine the new Pro Wrestling Guerrilla World Champion!

Tag Team Match
The Briscoe Brothers (Jay & Mark Briscoe) vs. The Cutler Brothers (Brandon & Dustin Cutler)

— While the concept of brothers forming a tag team in pro wrestling is nothing new, the fact that so many sets of brothers have competed in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla is truly astounding. Currently, there are three sets of brothers competing as tag teams in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, and while The Young Bucks and The Cutler Brothers have had their fair share of meetings (and the Bucks and Briscoe Brothers, as well), a match that has never taken place is Jay and Mark Briscoe facing off with Brandon and Dustin Cutler. Luckily that will no longer be the case after The Curse of Guerrilla Island!

After earning their first ever victory over the Young Bucks in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla at Night One of the 2010 Battle of Los Angeles, The Cutler Brothers went on to challenge World Tag Team Champions ¡Peligro Abejas! (El Generico & Paul London) for the titles on Night Two. While the Cutlers were unable to defeat the Bees, a victory over their long-time rivals followed by a title shot was a huge boost to the confidence of the Cutlers, and they believe that if given another championship opportunity that they would prevail.

The last time fans of Pro Wrestling Guerrilla saw the Briscoe Brothers it was at DDT4, where they were defeated by the eventual tournament winners (and current tag team champions) El Generico and Paul London). Though they were caught off guard by the unorthodox team of Generico and London, The Briscoes believe that they have taken the measure of the champions, and the result of the second meeting would be the exact opposite of the first. Both pair of brothers are eager for a rematch with the World Tag Team Champions, but to reach that point, they must get past each other first!

Singles Match
El Generico vs. Ricochet

— It took mere moments for Ricochet to win over the crowd at the first night of the 2010 Battle of Los Angeles, but it wasn’t until the second night that the fans knew Ricochet was the real deal. Despite being defeated in both contests, Ricochet’s innate charisma and exceptional athleticism transcended wins and losses, much like another fan favorite, El Generico. Now both men will meet for the first time ever in singles competition, though there will be no titles or tournaments on the line. Instead, El Generico and Ricochet will face off with the undying love of you, the fans of Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, at stake. Some might argue that this is a more valuable prize than any trophy or novelty oversized check professional wrestling might have to offer. Those that might argue that point obviously do not work for a bank, because last time we checked, you could not pay your mortgage with cheers from folks in Reseda.

Singles Match
Johnny Goodtime vs. “The Kentucky Gentleman” Chuck Taylor

Singles Match
“Azúcar” Rocky Romero vs. Ryan Taylor

Singles Match
“Pretty” Peter Avalon vs. Candice LeRae

Plus Brian Cage and more!
