Jay Cal’s View #14

Jay Cal’s View returns from a short sabbatical.  Hope you all had a nice holiday weekend and are ready for all the action taking place this week.  Congratulations to BOLA 2010 Winner, Joey Ryan who is the sixth person to win this honor.  Mach-1 this week features a special attraction match.  Bobby Quance will be making a one night only appearance as he steps into the ring with long time running partner TJ Perkins.  The NWA Returns to Television next week.  And Scorpio Sky will be the guest on Empire Wrestling Radio.  Plus I’ve got some up-coming events and results for you.  Thanks for reading.
Back in June a discussion was created by Steve about who would be the Wrestler of the Decade. And one name that received almost as much criticism as he did praise was one Joey “Magnum” Ryan. To Joey’s credit he has honed his craft in SoCal and has been heavily featured through out Southern California. It might be a shorter list, to names the promotions Joey hasn’t worked that the ones he has. Joey has held championships from all over Southern California and also won titles defended nationally in the PWG World Championship and the NWA World Tag Team Championships. Last Saturday Joey was finally able to cross one more accomplishment off his bucket list… becoming the Champion of the Battle of Los Angeles. Joey went through a bevy of talented wrestlers. Chuck Taylor in the first round, former ROH World Champion Austin Aries in the second round, Claudio Castagnoli in the Semis and in the Finals, Joey Ryan defeated former PWG World Champion Chris Hero to win the Tournament.  Although it took 12 superkicks, Joey Ryan became the 6th man to hold the honor.  It was later announced on Joey Ryan’s Twitter that he was officially putting himself on the 30 day disabled list retroactive to Sept 6th per the Doctor due to ligament & tendon damage in his shoulder from BOLA.  But September 5th at the end of the match, an exhausted Joey Ryan exclaimed to the crowd and to the world, “Whether you like it or not, I am the best!”

Congratulations Joey!

Tonight Legendary SoCal pro-wrestler Bobby Quance returns to the ring, for a one time match up against one of his old running mates.  “The Shooting Star” returns to Southern California for Mach-1 Wrestling to take on TJ Perkins.  If you never heard of Bobby Quance, then shame one you.  Go to your web search engine of choice and type in Bobby Quance.  Bobby was perhaps one of the most amazing wrestlers I’ve ever had the opportunity to watch live.  And in the early part of the decade certainly would be considered one of the BEST wrestlers period.  Quance’s roots started in All Pro Wrestling in Northern California, but much like the NorCo talent of the time, Quance migrated South.  Quance would become a semi-regular from promotions like PWG, the Inoki Dojo Shows, and on the East Coast for Combat Zone Wrestling.  To catch up on the career of Bobby Quance, I highly suggest trying to pick up Pro Wrestling Guerrilla’s earlier DVD releases.  Often pitted in matches against Super Dragon, Joey Ryan, Bryan Danielson, and Brian Kendrick.  Although admirable, Quance’s desire to serve the United States Military cut his pro-wrestling career short.  I hope everyone who attends Mach-1 Pro Wrestling tonight, appreciates what they are getting to see in the ring tonight.  And if any talent happens to read Jay Cal’s View, my recommendation is make sure you get an opportunity to speak to Quance, who helped build the foundation many of you are making a living now and a true professional.

Thank you Bobby.

Next Friday is the night that locally produced pro wrestling returns to television sets every in Southern California.  We’ve talked about it at length the past couple of weeks, but the National Wrestling Alliance debuts on KDOC-TV Friday September 17th.  Now this will not be the first episode of the Championship Wrestling from Hollywood, but rather a one hour special on the legacy of the NWA.  There is supposed to be featuring material from the past of the NWA and I have it one good word that, the producers have secured the proper rights to tell the story that they are presenting.  Even if you are not a fan of the NWA, you might want to check out what sounds like a historical piece of wrestling history.

Sept. 17th 8:00pm on KDOC Channel 56.

Scorpio Sky will be joining Jesse Hernandez on Empire Wrestling Radio  Hosted by Lalo Gonzalez and Kelli Lee on KCAA Radio 1050am or on the web at www.kcaaradio.com, the show will air 6PM to 7PM.  You can email your questions for Scorpio, Jesse, or the studio at empirewrestlingradio@yahoo.com or call in at 1-888-909-1050.
