Review of WSPW’s April 2nd, 2004 show

WSPW held yet another entertaining and strong show in Chula Vista. Attendance was lower than last time out, but still decent at an estimated 80.

Show starts with Chad McKenzee announcing that he has purchased 53% of the WSPW, and intends to right some wrong that have been occuring. His first order of business is that he has ordered an invitaional battle royal to name the number one contender for the next shows title match against the winner of tonights Andrew Hellman/Tommy Wilson match.Match 1: “Hawaiian Warrior” Makoa d. Jason Bennett

Match started off looking promising as Makoa was way over as the uber-face, and Bennett inciting the crowd as only he can. Unfortunately, after Bennett complaining about the size of his opponant and attempting to evade after Makoa overpowering him, match is cut short when Bennett gets knocked out.

Match 2: Masters of Perfection (Michael Masters and “Playboy” Johnny Perfect) d. Mo Love and Pumbaa

Masters and Perfect did a great job of working the cocky arrogant heel character, particularly with Masters jawing with the crowd. Mo Love and Pumbaa are ridiculously over. M of P get the win after a low blow behind the refs back and a sick looking backbreaker manuver by Masters, whereby he hooks his opponants head, drops down and snaps him backward across his own back.

Match 3: Lionheart d. Antonio Mestre

Classic old school style affair, with Mestre wasting time and avoiding Lionheart and both men working headlock exchanges for the first 8 minutes or so of the match. Crowd solidly behind Lionheart. Post match, Mestre attacks Lionheart, and drapes the Brazilian flag over his prone body.

Match 4: Damage Inc. and Off Da Hook to a double countout.

Good outing by both teams, as expected. Great job by Damage Inc. collectively of making the crowd truly hate them, and drawing much heat into the match itself. Preston Scott, in particular, has developed into truly one of the best heels in Socal. Matrix also jawed with the fans and worked the cocky asshole gimmick to a tee. Off Da Hook has some really cool double team combos.

Match 5: X-Foundation (Scott Lost and FBK) d. Mr. Smalls in a handicap match

Great job by X-Foundation working the knee of Smalls to keep the huge guy grounded. Interferance by Joey Ryan led to an awesome frog splash from Lost, and a grapevine of the damaged leg by FBK. Smalls passed out, and had his shoulders counted to the mat.

Match 6: Lil Nate d. Jason Creed

Vintage heel Nate working the Spanky-esque cocky S.O.B. style. Unfortunately, the combination of this being one of Creed’s first matches (and an impressive outing it was) and the crowd not knowing who either guy was took them out of the match seemingly altogether.

Island Studd cuts a promo about being overlooked for title contention and how he should be in the battle royal tonight, and will take his case up with new Commissioner McKenzee.

Match 7: “Old School” Oliver John d. “Technical Wizard” Joey Ryan

Ollie is an awesome wrestler and has tremeendous presence. He also takes some sick bumps, such as a head first lawndart over the top to the floor, and jumping back bump on the outside floor after being thrown into the ringpost. This one was shaping up to be a great match, but unfortunately both guys were just a little off, and never really got their flow.

Match 8: Invitational 22-Man battle royal to name the number one contender to the WSPW title.

Winner: Mr. Smalls

Order of elimination:

1) Mo Love, 2)Makoa (who then chased Jason Bennett several laps around the ring, into the back, back out and around the ring, and into the back again, causing bennett to never officially enter the match), 3) Oliver John, 4) Jason Creed, 5) Michael Masters, 6) “Playboy” Johnny Perfect, 7) Chad McKenzee, 8) Matrix, 9) Supa Badd, 10) Shawn Riddick, 11) Lionheart, 12) Preston Scott, 13) R2K, 14) Diabolic, 15) Catastrophe, 16) Pumbaa 17) FBK, 18) Scott Lost

(Antonio Mestre and Lil Nate, who had been milling about outside the ring, looking for the perfect opportunity to enter, started to approach the ring after Lost’s elimination, but took a longer look at Smalls, decided against it, and left.)

Match 9: Andrew Hellman d. Tommy Wilson to become the new WSPW Champion.

Wilson begins the match outsmarting and outwrestling Hellman. Soon after, Hellman begins using his strength advantage, and basically dominates the match, beating Wilson down and telling him not to get up. Tommy keeps coming, and eventually gets his second wind, and begins to get up on Hellman. Michael Masters and Johnny Perfect come to ringside and start distracting the ref, and Oliver John and Mr. Smalls come out to even up the score, as Wilson hits a suicide dive onto both men. With Wilson and Hellman back in the ring, and the ref attending to them men outside, John attempts to nail Hellman with the title belt, but accidentally hits Tommy instead. (Coincidentally the same way Wilson accidentally cost John the number one contenders match against Hellman last month.) After a beautiful elbow from the top by Hellman for the pin.

Post match, Wilson and John get into a shoving match, with John saying basically they’re even, and it should heve been him in the title match tonight anyway, but he knows Wilson is afraid of him. Smalls plays peacekeeper, and both men shake hands and hug, and all 3 guys leave as friends.

This was my second WSPW show, and overall they are very entertaining. The crowds are hot and eat up everything, and the workers seem to really be enjoying themselves. Some good matches, great old school flair, and entertaining stuff.

Make sure to cruise out to Chula Vista for the next show on April 30th.

Main Event: Andrew Hellman defends his newly won championship against Mr. Smalls.

Cruise on out, help support some great guys who have some good stuff happening down south, that really has the chance to become great stuff very soon.
