Review for EWF’s ”Halloween Slam 2003” in Yucaipa on 10/31/03

From a very charged main event to an equally hot match between the pastors at Set Free, EWF put on another solid showing in front of a raucous crowd of about 250.EWF’s “Halloween Slam 2003” in Yucaipa, CA @ Set Free Arena

Attendance: 250

First off, this show was a really good thing for the EWF to do. It was a free show and many of the victims of the fires that saw EWF on Wedensday were bussed over to the arena for the show. That being said, we got underway a little late after one of the pastors blessed the show.

Krazy KC over Handsome Johnny Starr

This was a decent opener with Starr whining the whole time about the crowd jeering him. Starr had the advantage early by using KC’s own hair to choke himself out. Starr tested the 5-count numerous times before going to work with some elbow drops on KC. KC soon came back and showed Starr what he thought of him by urinating on him and kicking dirt on him. Infuriated, Starr tried to get the advantage again, but KC planted him with a pump-handle slam to pick up the victory. Overall, a good opener that showed why Starr is inded one of the risings stars.

Torch over Ragin’ Dawg

Wow, what a ridiculously brutal affair. These two went at it ferociously, hitting each other with some very stiff work. Torch chopped the shit out of Dawg on numerous occasions that had the crowd cringing in horror. Torch taunted Dawg to the crowd’s disdain while he continued his brutal assault on the Dawg. After some submissions to Dawg’s head and neck, Torch picked up the victory by making Dawg tap-out to a version of the Dragon Sleeper. I never thought I would ever see Ragin’ Dawg tap-out, but it was a great finish to an all out war.

Bo Cooper over Vizzion to retain the EWF Heavyweight Championship

This match was a prime example of why Cooper is a consummate heel champion. Cooper came out razzing the crowd to get them to hate him right off. In the ring was no different, as Cooper constantly was using dirty tricks to get the upper hand, such as low-blows and other dastardly tactics. Vizzion fought valiantly, powered not only by his mullet but also by the markedly loud support of the crowd. After a corner-splah, Vizzion attempted another corner-splash and missed, after which Cooper rolled him up, grabbing the tights to get the pin to retain his title. This was a very solid affair that had the crowd into it from start to finish. This also started the crowd’s dis-like for the referee who didn’t see Cooper’s cheating and would fail to see more of the same for the rest of the night.

Intermission was next with the fans being able to get pictures with their favorite EWF stars.

Los Chivos over Alex Pincheck & Jason Castro

Castro and Pincheck got the crowd roaring after intermission as they came out with an American flag which spawned booming USA chants. Los Chivos came out and complained about a lack of Mexico chants which got them over as uber-heels. During the whole match the Chivos cheated more than I think has ever occurred in a wrestling match before, allowing them to whoop the crap out of Pincheck. Castro became increasingly infuriated at the referee who restrained him about six differnt times when he tried to come in while the Chivos were double-teaming Pincheck, thus causing the ref to miss the cheating. Finally, Alex managed to make a hot-tag to Castro who cleaned house. With the faces having both of the heels in opposite corners, the faces shot the heels off only to get reversed into pin attempts by both of the Chivos ending the match with both Castro & Pincheck getting pinned for the loss even though both of them had their feet on the ropes. The crowd absolutely exploded at this injustice and continued to taunt the referee while the faces left the ring in frustration.

West Coast Ryders (Rudy Luna & Under Pressure) over Psycho Silly Willy & Bino Gambino

Bino and Willy came out to ridiculously hot face chants as they were set to take on the extremely hated Ryders. This was definitely the match of the night in my eyes, with awesome tag-team action and good ole’ fashioned drama. Much like the Chivos accomplished the match before, the Ryders used numerous distractions to the referee to gain the upper hand. There was some very solid wrestling in this match, a stand-out move in my eyes was a sick Splash Mountain into a face-buster from Pressure to Bino. After a hot-tag to Willy, Rudy Luna took him out which allowed Pressure to hit his patented Pressure Point (Inverted Stunner/Bareback) on Bino to win. After the match, they continued to decimate Willy, hitting him with a DVD into a combo Neckbreaker/Powerbomb and Rudy hit a gross Splash Mountain DDT. Steve Masters ran-out to make the save and establish the hatred between Masters and the Ryders. Great match that had the crowd roaring.

Pastor Kirk over Pastor Vince

This match was a re-match from last show’s contest. Each of the pastor’s came out to great pops with their own entourages. Jesse Hernandez was the referee in this special match which saw some decent work between each of the guys before Ragin’ Dawg interjected himself in the match to give Pastor Vince the victory. Post match, Pastor Kirk got upset at Dawg’s interference and said that at Set Free, the pastors stay together. The two men of the cloth then promptly challenged Dawg to a Handicap match next show.

Steve Masters over Jason King by DQ. King retains the EWF American Title

This was a great main event to end a hot night of wrestling. King came out to a mixed reaction but quickly established his heelness by taunting the crowd and Masters. The match consisted of King working over Masters the whole time with various leg submissions in an effort to make Masters tap. Masters started to mount a come-back and crushed King with a stiff Spinebuster. It looked like we had a new champion before the West Coast Ryders pearl-harbored the ring and jumped Masters, thus earning King a dis-qualification. After chucking the ref out of the ring, the Ryders tried to double-team Masters, who countered and powedered them with a clothesline. After a face-down, Masters challenged the Ryders and King to a six-man tag next show in which Masters will find two mystery opponents to take on the Ryders. A great ending match to a night chock-full of hot action.

Steve Masters then turned to a more serious subject and called for all the boys to come out for a 10-toll count for Hawk. After the count, Masters gave a speech about Hawk from which the pastors of the church continued with a sermon about Christianity.

Overall a great show that was hotter than even Covina can be. I was awed by the crowd and the venue itself, as it has some tremendous audio and even has dual titan-trons. Well done to the EWF for putting on a wonderful show.
